Tom Holland reveals Sony had a wonderful idea to usher Spidey out of the MCU

I remember it like it was yesterday, that time when Marvel fans were led to believe that Tom Holland's Peter Parker was poised to web-swing away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Granted it didn't take long for both Sony and Marvel to reach an agreement that would see them continuing to share custody of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, but that didn't stop fans from getting madder than J. Jonah Jameson without a fresh headline that labels the New York-based hero as a menace to society. Here's the thing though, Holland, while on a press tour for Pixar's ONWARD, revealed that Sony had a rather solid plan if things between them and Marvel didn't pan out.

"The future of Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony we had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU," Holland recently told MTV International during an on-camera interview"Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident they were going to do justice and make a film that was the caliber that Spider-Man requires."

Holland, looking all dapper in his spectacles and brown leather coat, added, "But that said, I'm really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of fell that's where he belongs now. I'm really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home. It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man."

Holland's previous statement is of course referring to the time he drunk-dialed former Disney CEO Bob Iger to talk about some very important Spider-related matters.

"I was really drunk," says Holland. "I saw Bob Iger recently a couple of days ago in LA and said to him, 'When you come to London, I want to take you to the pub to have a pint and we can talk about Spider-Man is going to continue to be an amazing franchise for both Disney and Sony."

For the moment, we know that Sony and Marvel's deal has led to the development of a third film in the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING series. If and when it will be revealed that Holland's Spider-Man is somehow secretly involved in the making of Sony's MORBIUS and VENOM 2 has yet to be determined, though I'm sure that Spidey fans will keep their fingers crossed for a cameo until either film swoops into theaters. It's true that some cross-pollination between Sony and Marvel could happen sometime down the road, however I'm sure they'll make a big deal of it should the occassion arise.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to SPIDER-MAN 3, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 16, 2021.
