William Fichtner joins Independence Day 2; two more sequels planned

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

While William Fichtner doesn't get to receive top billing as often as I'd like, the man can always be counted upon to provide solid and memorable supporting roles. Deadline reports that Fichtner's next role is one that could expand greatly; he's set to join the ever-growing cast of the sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY in the role of a top general.

While not much more is known about William Fichtner's role, Deadline also mentions that Fichtner will have a larger presence in the two planned sequels to INDEPENDENCE DAY 2. It had previously been reported that two sequels to the original were in the works, but later Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin decided just to focus on the one film saying “let’s just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said you know what, let’s scale it down. Let’s first make sure that it works for everyone.” It seems as though that attitude may have changed as it now looks like we could be getting three sequels in total. That's an awful lot of aliens getting punched in the face.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is set to open on June 24, 2016.
