The original show, which ran from 1994-1998, chronicled the history of the titular 5-mile long ship which acted as a boon for interstellar peace and commerce in the year 2258. Creator of the show and writer Michael Staczynski (WORLD WAR Z, THOR) has attempted to make three feature films since the show's end. This particular film would be a complete reboot, however, using only the concept of the show as a launching point for new stories.
Straczynski's hope is that the producer of the show, Warner Bros. will greenlight the film for production in 2016. However, this is a special case in that Straczynski owns the rights to a feature film based on the show. In the event of Warner Bros. passing on this project, Straczynski's own studio, JMS, would produce the film on a budget of $80-100 million.
The man seems passionate on bringing a feature film to theaters, so this looks like if it's going to happen, it will do so in 2016. Given the recent success of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and Star Wars soon to be making a resurgence, it looks like Sci-Fi is going to be a hot commodity. In the meantime, Straczynski has plenty on his plate in regards to a television show he's working on with the Wachowski's entitled Sense8, which deals with a group of people around the world who find that they are not only linked mentally but are also being hunted down.
