The Glen / Glenda in Cult of Chucky speculation continues

Seed of Chucky Don Mancini

As CULT OF CHUCKY, the seventh installment in the CHILD'S PLAY franchise, heads toward its October release date, fans are keeping a close eye on writer/director Don Mancini's Twitter account, hoping to pick up clues about the new film in the series Mancini wrote into existence thirty years ago. Mancini is keeping a lot of things under wraps, but one of the major questions his tweets has brought to everyone's mind is: "Is Chucky's offspring Glen/Glenda from SEED OF CHUCKY in CULT OF CHUCKY?"

Mike Sprague wrote up an article about the Glen/Glenda speculation last month, and this mystery stretches all the way back to last September, when Mancini was using a Glen doll as a double for Chucky while putting together storyboards for the new film.

Speculation has been stirred up again by a tweet in which Mancini thanked Glen/Glenda voice actor Billy Boyd for "giving Glen/Glenda his/her beautiful heart". Some fans are taking this as confirmation that the character will be returning to screens this Halloween. But if we pull back and look at the full context, it's not so clear.

The tweet thanking Billy Boyd was part of a series of tweets in which Mancini was celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month, sharing tweets from fans about what the Glen/Glenda character meant to them. This series of tweets began when Mancini shared the link to a Blumhouse article written by Arrow in the Head alum Brennan Klein titled "Why SEED OF CHUCKY is the Radically Queer Film We All Need Right Now". Mancini was discussing SEED OF CHUCKY, and could have simply been thanking Boyd for his SEED performance. The tweet to the actor could have nothing to do with CULT OF CHUCKY.

So, whether you would be happy or disappointed to see Glen/Glenda again, don't build up any anticipation or dread just yet. The character's involvement in CULT still hasn't been confirmed either way.

What has been confirmed is that CULT OF CHUCKY will star Fiona Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Grace Lynn Kung, Summer H. Howell, Alex Vincent, and Brad Dourif (as the voice of Chucky). The film has the following synopsis:

Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic "tool" to facilitate his patients' group sessions – an all-too-familiar "Good Guy" doll with an innocently smiling face – a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn't crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky's now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child's Play, races to Nica's aid. But to save her he'll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky's long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

CULT OF CHUCKY will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD just in time for Halloween. With or without Glen/Glenda.
