The trailer for Here Comes the Boom features a pumped Kevin James getting his butt kicked

I don’t know many people who would consider themselves Kevin James fans. I mean, if you have seen PAUL BLART: MALL COP, ZOOKEEPER, or GROWN UPS, you pretty much know the guy is a chubby dude who falls down and makes confused faces yet somehow still gets Leslie Bibb, Rosario Dawson, Winona Ryder, and Maria Bello in the sack. I pretty much write the guy off the moment I see his name on a project.

But, when the trailer for HERE COMES THE BOOM was released, I took a chance. I was fully prepared to write a scathing story about it. But, I actually liked it.

Plot: A high school biology teacher moonlights as a mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to save the school’s music program.

I am not an MMA fan whatsoever but this film struck the right chords with me. James is very subdued (don’t worry, cinephiles. He still falls down a lot), but he actually looks like he is taking the role seriously this time. The movie trailer looks like a good mix of teacher/sports success stories. James looks like he gained some muscle for the role, too.

Directed by Happy Madison mainstay Frank Coraci (THE WEDDING SINGER), HERE COMES THE BOOM also stars the absolutely gorgeous Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler (also gorgeous), Greg Germann, and Charice.

HERE COMES THE BOOM opens October 12, 2012.
