del Toro’s Witches

Last Updated on July 27, 2021

Now this is just getting ridiculous. Empire Online dropped word today that filmmaker extraordinaire Guillermo Del Toro has just added yet another project to this plate. Between producing and directing, del Toro has several movies on his slate including HATER, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, FRANKENSTEIN, THE HOBBIT, THE STRAIN, HELLBOY 3, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, DROOD, CRIMSON PARK, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, and SATURN AND THE END OF DAYS. I’m sure there’s more but come on!

Joking aside though, good for him. Del Toro is a brilliant filmmaker and deserves every penny he gets. Not to mention that I’d put money down on the bet that each of those films turn out to be a little piece of Heaven…. or something close. So with all that being said… in comes the news on del Toro’s next next project. It’s going to be an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book THE WITCHES. The story follows a seven-year-old boy who has a run-in with some real-life witches! Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him. Well we all know how del Toro loves his fantasy lands, so a children’s book about Witches should be right down his alley!

Alfonso Cuaron will be producing with del Toro directing. Apparently the duo were looking to adapt Dahls’ Uncle Oswald when they settled on THE WITCHES instead. Cuaron even stated how del Toro already wrote a script and that it’s ‘amazing.’ When the hell did that man find time to write another script? Maybe he’s got little worker elves that do all his work for him and he can just sit around coming up with brilliant ideas all day? I wouldn’t put it past him.

And get this! Cuaron also told Empire that this won’t be like Nicolas Roeg’s adaptation of THE WITCHES because del Toro plans on doing the whole thing in stop-motion animation. That’s exciting. del Toro’s brilliant mind, tied in with a fantasy story, all brought to us in stop-motion… unfortunately we’ll probably be waiting for this one for another five years. But there you have it! Del Toro adds yet another intriguing project to his ongoing list. Keep it here for any and all del Toro news as we hear it.
