Andy Serkis says exactly who Supreme Leader Snoke is not plus more info

01.04.2016

Given how little is given away of Supreme Leader Snoke in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, that left many to try and connect some dots. The only other "great" villain from the films that fans are familiar with would be Darth Plageus, who was supposedly killed by Sidious early on. Snoke has a pretty mangled face so it wasn't TOO much of a stretch to think that perhaps Plageus survived the assassination attempt and waited in the shadows to make his movie....except that's not the case at all.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Andy Serkis confirmed that Snoke is an entirely new character to the STAR WARS canon who is also familiar with the events that have transpired in the past. He also spoke a bit about creating the character and why they went the CGI route.

Andy Serkis on Supreme Leader Snoke:

When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance.

Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.

The scale of him, for instance, is one reason. He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design — you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]

I'm not 100% sold that they needed to go CG with Snoke, but perhaps there's more to him that we need to see. Also floating around out there is his ACTUAL height. Admittedly, I missed out on this info before seeing the film, but for those of you who were worried we may actually have a giant on our hands, fear not. Neal Scanlan, chief of creature and droid effects, gave People the scoop that Snoke is "7-foot-something tall" and "very, very thin." Not exactly the gargantuan he appears to be in FORCE AWAKENS, but he should still make for an intimidating presence. Hopefully Rian Johnson gives audiences a reason to fear Snoke come EPISODE VIII.

I blame Snoke's CGI on the rush production from Disney

I was bothered a little bit by Snoke being CGI. Was it the most convincing? Not really, but for a hologram image of him I'll let that pass. Also, I know for a fact that the post-production team was still rushing to get the visuals done, and the editors were also rushing with the final edit of the film for completion. The blame for this rush is Disney. Remember, when they hired JJ Abrams they told him, film release for May 2015. Abrams pleaded for more time to work on the screenplay, casting,

Abrams pleaded for more time to work on the screenplay, casting, and production with cushion time. Abrams asked for May 2016, they gave him December 2015. At least they gave an 6 months, but Disney and Hollywood need to realize, your not going to get a great film if you rush into production without a completed script and rush production time on top of that.

the entire First Order sucks in my opinion. Hux, Phasma, Kylo Ren and every last damn stormtrooper ... they are all incompetent fools... all Kylo Ren had to say was this: "sit back and wait for that droid to find its way to the resistance... then follow the ship to Skywalker hidden location"

I love how about midway through the flick, Kylo ren gives up on nabbing the droid and grabs Rey instead... you just gave up persuring the droid? really? you just GAVE UP?
the first order may have star

the first order may have star destroyers and a million stormtroopers.. .and yet they still cant get anything done right.

Secretly, I was hoping Snoke was Darth Plageus. Then all they would have to say in Episode VIII is that Snoke is Plageus and I would know exactly who he is and where he falls into the Star Wars saga because of Episode III.

"I'm not 100% sold that they needed to go CG with Snoke". Forget that Sean, I'm not sure they needed to introduce yet another brand new character without giving us any sort of background to who they are in Force Awakens, and how Snoke came into being and power. With Rey, it makes total sense, because she doesn't have any clue about who she really is and where she comes from. Making us wonder if Rey is a descendant of Obi Wan or a Skywalker. My money is on she's a descendant of Obi Wan.

I really enjoyed The Force Awakens, but the unanswered questions surrounding The Force Awakens are higher than my desk! Episode IV and Episode I, left some unanswered questions, but did a far better job of bringing the audience up to speed on plot, characters, conflicts, etc.

Yep Snoke isn't Darth Plagueis just like Waltz isn't Blofeld and Cumberbatch isn't Khan and Marion Cotillard isn't Talia Al Ghul. :) We understand Andy. lol next year he'll be like "Well he's an entirely new character to be seen on screen" lol

Of course he's not Darth Plageus, he's just the same character with a different name and slightly different look just like everything else in EpVII.

Considering how much the people who worked in the movie talked about how practical effects are better, I trust when one of them say that CGI was needed for something.

I'm not hating on the movie but I'm sure they could have done him with practical effects. I don't like that he's CGI. Looks like an Orc from Lord of the RIngs. I feel that it will bring me out of the movie once he start appearing more. Hope i'm wrong.
