Antoine Fuqua says the 24 movie is dead

Mar. 11, 2013by:

After years of trying to get a big screen adventure for Jack Bauer made, it looks like the chances of ever seeing a 24 movie are coming to a close. After eight real time seasons and a TV movie, it seemed inevitable for Kiefer Sutherland's iconic character to make the jump to theaters and take the place left vacant by John McClane and the DIE HARD franchise. The closest we ever got was OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN director Antoine Fuqua signing up to direct the 24 movie.

Fuqua, who is also developing biopics of Tupac Shakur and Miles Davis, recently told IndieWire that the 24 movie has stalled completely.

Yeah, thats not happening. I dont think its gonna happen at all, definitely not with me, Fuqua shrugs, putting the stake in what has always been a pretty tenuous project. I met with Kiefer [Sutherland], Fox wanted to do it, it was a matter of his schedule before he went off to do his new show [Touch]. The story that circulated was that there were budgetary disputes, as well as the matter of a meager offer to Sutherland, and Fuqua leans towards that by admitting, I dont think he was able to get a proper agreement with Fox. The time just passed, and I went off to go to what I was doing.

You would think it would have been a slam dunk for a 24 movie to have gotten made. I mean, they obviously would have had to abandon the real time gimmick, but Jack Bauer was such an identifiable character, the movie would have done pretty well at the box office. OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, which echoes a subplot from the seventh season of 24, would have worked perfectly as a Jack Bauer adventure. In fact, if Kiefer Sutherland had not elected to star in the awful series TOUCH, we may have seen the 24 movie happen.

While 24 is not completely dead, I would say having the director move on, the star move on, and the creators and producers move on is as close to a nail in the coffin as we will get on this project.

I don't even get the appeal of doing a 24 movie, and I never missed an episode. Its not like the characters or story were anything to really write home about. At the show's absolute best (for my money, seasons Three and Five) it was the week-in, week-out suspense and plot twists that made it what it was. That anticipation of what'll happen next week doesn't translate to film.

I'm guessing we'll get a 21 Jump Street, Dragnet style nostalgic action-comedy sendup of it in ten years.

I'm going to get SO MUCH negativity for this...

...but thank God this isn't happening. I never liked 24, not because I'm not patriotic or "un-American" but because I just hated the guy who played Jack Bauer and a lot of the story was too freaking amateurish. I thought they could have done better...especially if it wasn't a FOX show, but more of a late-night Showtime/HBO/Starz show. The first season and second were alright...but only that, they kind of ruined it all trying to put too much and they would have made the movie crappy as

DAMNIT!!!

I was dreading this would happen.....It sucks to no end that even with an established brand and legacy, the studio couldn't even secure 50M for a freaking 24 movie, while films like Battleship had a budget of 210+M(!). Goes to show you how incredibely ridiculous Hollywood can be sometimes.

Damn

Def one of my favorite TV shows of all time, the real time aspect was such a great thing to use, im not sure how they would have made a movie using that format, but I would have loved to see Jack Bauer on the big screen

Well, that's too bad - I never really got into the series, but I'm sure a theatrical film if done right would've been very cool. I've been wondering, would a "24" film take place in real-time of 2 - 2.5 hours?

You SHOULD try watching the series starting with the superawesome Season 1, and work your way down to 8. If you ever been a fan of neilbiting suspense and ridiculous action with a Great character on front (like Die Hard), you'll love it. Not all the seasons were a blast (namely season 4 & 6), but most of the time, it was just sooo much popcorn-fun! Trust me, this series totally spoiled me for any mere 2hr action movie for life!

Well this just won't do. This just won't do at all. Though I did realize that America didn't need a drone program when it still had Jack Bauer. Fact.

This is upsetting. I was really looking forward to seeing this film and seeing Jack Bauer grace the big screen.

I swear every new season of 24 was an event. That's how epic and great the show was. The way the show ended though was disappointing, so I would like to see a proper ending for Jack in this film.

Another example of Fox fucking up a sure fire thing. The amount of times they balls up extremely simple franchise fare leads me to believe that it's always a pure fluke that the company ever seems to get a good franchise to begin with.

A 24 film should've been a complete no brainer, striking whilst the iron was hot on the heels of season 8, with a strong action director (read: Not fucking John Moore!). Throw more than enough money at Kiefer because he's Jack fucking Bauer, and you would've

Throw more than enough money at Kiefer because he's Jack fucking Bauer, and you would've made a shit tonne of money regardless of the quality of movie (though obviously I prefer it to be strong).

Bauer was absolutely ready to have a good action movie series in him, and that time is all but passed at the moment. Utterly criminal.

I have to say I am quite disappointed. I think Jack deserves a more fitting finale than the way the show ended. Maybe sense Touch is all but cancelled, Sutherland will return to this and see it gets made. Although of course Fuqua is not the most diligent person in Hollywood either, he has had that Pablo Escobar movie in the work for years. Maybe Fox dropped him and he got pissy.

His new show Touch is on the cancellation chopping block so he might have a lot of free time coming up to maybe try and get this off the ground again.

It is a shame. I haven't really been watching a whole lot of TV since the end of 24 and LOST. I used to watch 24 religiously and the movie had me excited for a legitimate finale to Jack Bauer's story, since the season 8 (and series) finale was a terrible way to end the show. Hopefully this actually gets picked up again and they do it so Jack Bauer can get a justifiable end and not the travesty that they ended the series with,
