Boardwalk Empire’s Travis Tope in talks for Independence Day sequel

Casting continues for Roland Emmerich's long-awaited sequel to 1996's INDEPENDENCE DAY as The Wrap is reporting that "Boardwalk Empire" and THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN actor Travis Tope is in negotiations to join Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Vivica A. Fox, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jeff Goldblum for the project.

Although details on the plot are few and information on Tope’s role has not yet been revealed, we do know that the young actor is being sought to play a character named Charlie.

Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is looking to begin production in May. Dean Devlin wrote the first draft of the film with Emmerich, while James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright wrote the most recent draft. James Vanderbilt also had a hand in writing the movie, which Emmerich and Devlin are producing with Harald Kloser.

The original INDEPENDENCE DAY opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser.
