Filming has begun on David Yates' Tarzan starring Alexander Skarsgard

07.15.2014

Despite some productions delays over the years, principal photography is finally underway on David Yates' TARZAN. Pixar filmmaker Andrew Stanton didn't have much luck adapting Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter character for the big screen, so here's hoping that David Yates can bring us something special with Tarzan.

Yates hasn't been up to too much since directing the last four Harry Potter flicks, aside from doing the pilot episode to Tyrant. I think he adaquetly carried Potter across the finish line with some style, so I'm very curious to see what else he can bring to cinema. Of course, it certainly doesn't hurt to have every woman's fantasy, Alexander Skarsgard, as leading man John Clayton, as well as THE WOLF OF WALL STREET's gorgeous Margot Robbie as Jane. The supporting cast is even more impressive, with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt, and Christoph Waltz.

The plot goes a little something like this:

It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side.  Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz).  But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

The timeline in which this story takes place definitely has me interested. I think we're all familiar with the discovery of Tarzan and his love affair with Jane. Now that he's "become" John Clayton, I'll be curious to see how David Yates will handle his heading back to the Congo, and the kind of shenanigans that will ensue. No word yet if everyone will have a nose.

Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgard, Christoph Waltz, Margot Robbie, and Samuel L. Jackson, is slated for release on July 1, 2016.

I'm a big fan of all of Margot Robbie's scenes from THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.

Really hope this does well. It's got great source material and a very talented cast. Hopefully Waltz and Jackson have some scenes together so that we can have a mini Django Unchained reunion. And Skarsgaard deserves to be a bigger star after his success on True Blood for seven years.

A fellow schmoe said Skarsgard's True Blood co-star Joe Manganiello would've been a better fit for the part and I agree.
