First teaser trailer & new poster for Star Wars: The Last Jedi have arrived!

04.14.2017

Happy Friday, everyone! Have plans? Gonna do something fun? Have some laughs and perhaps meet a special someone, yes? Not anymore! This, this is what you're going to do all day: watching the first teaser for STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI. It's finally here and you're going to watch it again and again until you can see it in your dreams. I want essays on my desk examining the footage in its entirety. I want 10 pages!

DOWN HERE, YOU FOOLS!

Wow. So many cool moments packed into such a short amount of time. It was like going to five birthday parties in a row and they all had bouncey castles. Rey (Daisy Ridley) is going through her training and learning how to become a Jedi master, but her mentor doesn't seem too thrilled. Basically what we can get from this is that after looking for the Jedi temples Luke (Mark Hamill) has become disillusioned with life, hence the line "the Jedi must end." Visually director Rian Johnson is really making this film look beautiful like so terrific lighting and framing. I'm even more in than I was before, and I was ALL THE WAY in before. Going back in for round 10.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI arrives December 15 with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

This teaser did its job. It definitely carries Johnson's style while retaining the feel of Star Wars but what's truly impressive is the direction they seem to be taking with Luke seemingly realizing how the force was perverted by the dogmas of the Jedi and the Sith. His desire to end the Jedi is the true way of bringing balance to the force since the Sith are gone meaning Rey and Ren are the new idea of force users who utilize both the dark and light side.

Is it me, or wasn't the Lightsaber cut on Kylo Ren's face more center? In the trailer it looks like it is across his eye now.

Well I will say this gave me some chills. It has some of the most beautiful shots I've ever seen in the star wars universe. That wide shot of Rey practicing on the island with Luke further up the hill/stairs still looking down on her was gorgeous. I also am optimistic they might be doing the story of the Gray Jedi's. Force Awakens was pretty much SJW garbage with a few nice elements, and this is coming from someone whose favorite Jedi is Ahsoka. But this finally looks like they're going into

But this finally looks like they're going into new territory for the series which is greatly needed. The Star Wars universe is deep and rich, with most of the expanded universe and series far eclipsing the originals. Hopefully this will be the first step into expanding the universe lore on the big screen.

So the visuals are gorgeous. The look is nowhere near the look of the original or even The Force Awakens. I think it has its own visual signature. Does anyone know if some of these scenes are shot on IMAX? Because the quality of digital overtook 35mm on crispness, sharpness, and contrast a while ago; ..and this all looks pretty damn sharp and crisp with great contrast. Is it all film? Or is this just what can be done to film in post with computers?

Some of the scenes were definitely shot on 70mm IMAX. But not the whole movie, TFA was very proud of shooting entirely on film so I imagine the rest of the non IMAX scenes were still on film for The Last Jedi. I believe Episode 9 is planning on shooting the entire movie on 65mm film

@iceman1607, I know that Christopher Nolan is a HUGE proponent of the film medium, but watching the trailers for Dunkirk, which I believe was shot on a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm, it looks out of place with the other trailers in that the sharpness and crispness and contrast in nowhere near as good as the newer digital films. Could it be because most theaters are projecting in digital and in the process downsamples the images? Or are we/me just getting too used to the look of

But It's getting easier and easier to spot film as digital is getting better and better and notice how soft the images are compared to digital.

I think its a combination of a lot of the factors you mentioned like almost all theaters using digital projection and the sheer fact that we're all just getting use to digital because that's what's out there. I remember seeing Interstellar at an art house theater projected from a 35mm print and it definitely didn't look anywhere near as crisp as I had remembered film to be. I do think film is still naturally better with contrast and color in a lot of areas. Digital is a lot more flat, but it's

I do think film is still naturally better with contrast and color in a lot of areas. Digital is a lot more flat, but it's flat because it's meant to be adjusted with color blocking and other techniques in post. And Hollywood is getting better and better at doing the proper adjustments. I think film is still better at capturing a much higher quality raw image which is how you're able to get 4K versions of films like Labrynth or eventually the original trilogy. But at the end of the day editing, adjustments and viewing/projection is pretty much all done digitally even if the movie was shot on film.

I was blown away with how good my Rogue One Blu Ray looks and figured it must have been shot on film and Disney just really took the time to put the highest quality print on Blu Ray, but after some research I found that Rogue One was shot on a 65mm DIGITAL camera. So I think film will always have a place, but digital technology is getting very good and the people who treat digital films are also getting very good at their jobs. Fun discussion! :)

I know the bigger film stock allows for the images to be projected on bigger screens without loss of quality, but I think the image sharpness is inherently not as sharp as today's best digital cameras. And I think film looks much flatter than digital because of the "tricks" with lighting necessary and "taught" to old school cinematographers to get "good" images.
We are seeing new cinematographers blow up all those cliches because the new cameras allow them to. Better low light for example. I

Meh....

Bring the thumbs down. Not gonna hate just doesn't do much for me. Really I'm trying to figure out if they can bounce back from force awakens. Doesn't do much to change my mind. Could be a bad sign.

I'm intrigued to say the least

I think the speculation about the title and Luke's comments in the trailer have been interesting. While it would be neat to see a Force-user other than Jedi or Sith (which it seems we've seen with Ren and Snoke), I personally think the title and Luke's comments are trailer red herrings. I think Luke will be vindictive and hesitant to train Rey, but will change his mind as the story unfolds.

It does what a good trailer should

It gets you pumped for the movie without giving away too many plot points - and raising more questions than it answers.

My best hopes were realized: THE FORCE AWAKENS wasn't just a really expensive fan film, it reassured us that Disney would respect the STAR WARS universe but now the story is going somewhere new. I'm excited to see where it leads.

I think he crossed a point of no return in Force Awakens. Not even Darth Vader could bring himself to intentionally kill his own family. Destroying the mask means that he is definitely evolving, but I have a feeling it's going to be into something worse. At least that's what I'm hoping will happen. It feels like it would be a let down if he suddenly becomes a good guy.

Beautiful. When they announced the title, it suggested to me that the whole concept of Jedi and Sith would evolve, and we would start to see brand new types of force users. With Kylo Ren ditching his helmet, and Luke saying "The Jedi must end", it does seem to be going in that direction. I think the point of Force Awakens was to start from something we're all familiar with (hence all the nods to the original trilogy), and then this film is where things start to evolve into something we

Also, I'm pretty sure the mention of the word "balance" is significant, and supports the theory that Rey is the one who will fulfill the prophecy mentioned way back in Episode 1. That's probably a big hint as to who her "parents" are (i.e. the force itself). Daisy Ridley even said in an interview once that her character came from nowhere, and she found a way to fit in. There may be more truth to that than we realized.

This is one of the better teasers for a franchise I've seen in a while. It doesn't show much. But it raises questions. questions that need answering. And if Star Wars needs anything, it's a deeper exploration of its philosophy.

The poster and Luke's words "the jedi must end" might mean that a new type of jedi must be established to fight off evil. Maybe Rey will be taught both the light and the dark side so as to not succumb to either. True balance of the force requires knowledge of both sides.

Totally agree with you - especially as she sees darkness in her vision - it seems Luke is prepared to do what the Jedi order did not want
Can see an intriguing plot of whether Ridley then may turn to the dark side in episode 9?

A teaser that does what a TEASER is supposed to do...

IT TEASES!! It's not a full blown trailer. Its just something to start the hype train. It does that perfectly. BALANCE to the force has always been the prophecy. What if that means no Jedi or Sith, only Force Users. A grey area, a middle of the path. I think that is the take away from this "Jedi Must End" line...

This is the trailer version of Family Guy's joke "Something something something Dark Side. Something something something, complete." But the visual effects look great and I like the poster.
