Fox wins Watchmen ruling

12.26.2008

The ongoing legal battle between Warner Bros. and Fox over the theatrical distribution rights to the upcoming WATCHMEN movie is continuing in California's Federal District Court with Judge Gary Allen Fees issuing a ruling on the 24th that Fox has a "right to distribute" the movie. Now before we go storming Fox headquarters with pitchforks and torches, this doesn't necessarily mean that WATCHMEN will a) be delayed, b) never see the light of day or c) be cut and edited down by Fox. Both Warner Bros. and Fox have a vested financial interest in the success of the movie and all this means is that Warner Bros. may have to eventually pony up some cash to Fox. And while that's sucky news for Warner Bros., it's no real skin of my back as a WATCHMEN fan. Now if there are significant delays (which is possible if Warner Bros. intends to fight this tooth and nail) then I'd be pissed. I've gotten a lot of angry e-mails about this and I think we should all just chill and wait and see what happens. Sending e-mails to the judge isn't going to help. A full and more detailed ruling from the judge is expected on Wednesday. Stay tuned...

No Delays

If there are no delays somebody will get my cash. I will pay up to see it released on time and as is. But if this pushes the release back even one day I will not spend one dollar on any of their movies. If they want money they can't do dumb shit like this.

As long as they don't do major edits or something it doesn't really bother me too much.

This is stupid. Warner Bros. fucked this up in the first place. Don't go blaming Fox. More power to 'em, I say!

As a fan of Watchmen, the film doesn't matter to me - it'll never be as good as the comic. That said, I do wanna see it, but I'm not putting any blame on Fox.

WB won't get 90% of the take

As Paramount already owns 25% of the movie, and has international distribution rights. The argument now stems to how much Fox wants to take from the project. Considering how they wanted to treat the project, we can only be glad they've got their hands on it AFTER production has completed.

Fox will get their percentage, and will probably end up distributing it in territories that Paramount had planned on. This could end up being a real big mess, and no one will get to see it.

We can only

We can only hope that someone has the sense to agree a deal before March 6th.

fox can delay film since they have distribution rights but they cant touch the cut of the film but why would they delay film since they only get paid what the film makes

i'm sure the movie will be enjoyable(or not) for fans of the graphic novel no matter who distributes it.

From what I've heard, the movie will come out for sure. Fox has no say as if it comes out or not...

...What is troubling is the WHEN? Some have said that the pending decision could delay the release to as far back as 2011 in a worst case scenario.

Realistically, as long as WB plays fair and hands them the cash, we should get our movie on the intended date...hopefully...

WB wins

WB will get 90% of the cash for this, they did all the work. With 3 months to go, the movie is in it's end phases of production. They are just tidying up now.

Typically when this happens the studios will do a joint release and split the cash. Both Fox and WB likely think that this will bring in a ton of cash (thanks partly to 300) and I doubt Fox will force edits or cuts to a PG-13 rating, as they understand this would seriously upset the fan base. I doubt this will turn into anything big.

pg13?

I'd be worred now that fox makes snyder cut the film to a pg-13, which they have been known to do

Not an actual decision...

...but simply a legal measure from the judge, as the actual court date is in January. Reason being so WB doesn't say "Oh crap, Let's rush this thing out next week, so that it's released before the court case." It's basically just a temporary injunction until both sides have had their day in court, nothing more. It does mean that the judge does think that there is some merit to Fox's case... but not thatFox automatically wins. It's pretty common in cases like this.

It IS indeed a pretty bitch move by Fox to let another studio shell out to make the film and then sue just as the film is completed and generates tremendous buzz, but then again who is really surprised - it's FOX for Christ's sake!

F*CK FOX!

This is madness!
Of all studios to battle over the rights for Watchmen, Fox just had to be that studio. Fox's projects over the last 5 years or so have turned out to be the equivalent of horseshit, and now they have their lil' dirty fingers all over what may be next year's biggest blockbuster; Watchmen.

I hope Warner chucks a huge lump of cash in Fox's face just to seal their lips and go on with Watchmen. We all know Fox doesn't care about the quality or whatnot of that movie. And
