UPDATED: New poster and trailer for Brad Pitt's World War Z has lots of explosions, aircraft, and zombie marathoners

Mar. 25, 2013by: Paul Shirey

UPDATE: New poster has been added.  See below!

The first full trailer for WORLD WAR Z, starring Brad Pitt, Matthew Fox, Mireille Enos, David Morse, and James Badge Dale has leaked online a few days early. Featuring a shitload of zombie marathoners, explosions, and aircraft (seriously, they are flying everywhere in this thing), the Marc Forster directed zombie apocalypse actioner looks to have all the ingredients for a summer blockbuster. Now, the question is: Did they mix those ingredients right?

I read Max Brooks' novel many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, but took note early on that it would be one hell of an undertaking to adapt to the big screen.  The production has been through its share of shake-ups with reshoots, budget issues, and some controversy between Forster and the studio.  However, it seems like they've worked out their differences enough to create something compelling and with a lot of promise.  No doubt, fans of the book will be critical, but that's to be expected.  Personally, I think it looks pretty cool and it has the potential to rock the house.

Limber up:

United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt) traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

WORLD WAR Z kicks off the zombie marathon on June 21, 2013.

I feel like I'm in another Universe. This book was God awful trash. One of the most boring books I've ever read. It's written like a boring American History book. A great idea no doubt, but one that just doesn't actually work. This movie looks great though. Everyone seems to want some crappy documentary style movie like the ones we were forced to watch in high school. Remember the ones we all used to fall asleep during. Except now you all want to pay to watch it.

Ok, I'm gonna be completely honest...

You see, while this looks like it could be a good film, it doesn't look like it would be a good WWZ film. I mean...they've altered the zombies & seemingly the storyline enough that it makes me wonder why they didn't just do something original instead.

I mean if you need to change the movement & reason for why Zombies are scary to make your movie work, then perhaps you should have used a monster other than zombies as your antagonist, maybe create your own.. Same thing goes for this & any

Hollywood, if you can't be faithful to a property, drop it and create your own. Stop using and abusing intelectual properties in order to get gullible fans to see your film while simultaneously changing anything that made fans like it in the 1st place. If you want to make a Superman film but change his suit, power set & origin...then you don't want to make a Superman film, you want to use the Superman name to put butts in seats & it will come back to bite you in the ass later.

Yes..Iit's hard to secure funding for a film whose intelectual property is unknown, especially one with a high price tag, we get that...But it's better that it *NOT* be made than damage the intelectual properties' good name and enrage it's fanbase in order to sell us a ticket.

Back to my Superman IV comparison. We can buy into the fantasy of an alien with superpowers, but we can't buy into something that ignores basic reality like a human breathing "space air". Why? Because it is so batshit stupid. Same thing with this film. I can buy into the fantasy of a zombie, but not into the idea of zombies defying gravity & basic physics. Why? Zombies are basically people, dead people, but still bound by the limitations of the human body. That is the inherent rules of zombies.

Spider-Man has spider powers. That's is an inherent rule of the character. If Spider-Man started flying and shooting lasers out of his eyes it would become stupid. It would become like a zombie movie where the zombies defied gravity and could build structures with their bodies.

I kind of agree, PuffCity. Even the inherent rules of zombies ignore rigamortis, they let zombies have clear eye sight, they seem to easily distinguish humans from other zombies. The zombies in Walking Dead appernetly are slow, yet don't seem lose much strength if they can get a hold of you. People are splitting hairs.

So magical wizards, time traveling assassins and transforming robots could also be in this movie, and it wouldn't distract you - because it's a zombie movie. I'm glad I understand the rules of Hollywood. I'll try to get over myself.

I dont really consider this "a zombie movie" any more than I Am Legend was "a zombie movie" plus we still haven't seen ANY close-ups of any of the Zombies (which worries me) they are all very small and CGI animated with Particle effects...

Here's what I see as the problem with the adaptation (so far)

Adaptations often have to change things, even big things, to translate effectively to a different medium. The Walking Dead is actually a good example of that. The big no-no is when you change something that is very much the spirit of the original work. The book is very much about trying to make a fantastical hypothetical seem plausible. Everything from the way the zombies are depicted, to the cobbled together interviews, are designed to make the reader feel like some piece of alternate history

Everything from the way the zombies are depicted, to the cobbled together interviews, are designed to make the reader feel like some piece of alternate history has been found. These previews, by making it the travails of a single man to save his family, against a swirling CGI horde of hive-minded super zombies, totally breaks a crucial premise and objective of the book. The planet itself is really a character in World War Z (it's even in the title). The advance promotion for this movie seems to be breaking that. Maybe it's just being marketed that way - I don't know. But that's my problem with what I'm seeing.

Perhaps the poster is beyond you. That poster depicts exactly what the zombies would do in their neverending pursuit of food. Think they wouldn't climb over each other to get at some meat?

Pity the helicoptor pilot and his mistake to try and grab a survivor - totally misjudging the speed of the zombies who were able to grab the chopper and increase it's weight load causing it to not be able to rise as fast as the pilot had planned - allowing more of them to pile on.

People also complain about fast moving zombies - if someone just died they should be able to move fast as they have not had their muscles atrophy yet. As they devolve further into zombie state, they would move slower and slower before finally rotting away.

One problem Shonk, there is this thing called gravity, and it would prevent anything larger than an insect from doing shit like that. And insects can only accomplish this feat because they work together, communicate, have the proper physical bodies, and can easily latch on to each other. It is physically impossible for human bodies to form structures like that. This movie has mindless raging zombies defying physics to the point of being stupid & insulting.

Kind of like in 'Superman IV' when

Kind of like in 'Superman IV' when Nuclear Man kidnaps Lacy and flies her into space, and she can breath just fine up there.. That was such a ridiculous leap from reality (even for a Superman movie) that it was insulting.

I'm sorry but that just looks like I Am Legend 2

Which coincidentally(or not?) was also a mostly bad adaptation of a good book. I really hope this will be better than it looks and I truly hope the people amongst you who look forward to this will have a blast watching it. But this just looks like generic hollywood crap to me and I have seen too much of that shit.

Just can't get excited

I have not read the book, so I have no idea how the movie compares... but I just cannot get excited for this. Some stuff looks cool (like the scene on the plane), but the CGI zombie herds / tidal waves just look stupid. CGI has its place, but this really looks like a video game... Maybe within the context of the movie it will be. Either way, it will take some pretty spectacular review to get me into the theater for this.

The movie looks good but it's so hard to see any potential in a film that stars Brad Pitt. I think I would be more excited if it starred Justin Bieber or Whoopi Goldberg rather than him. For being such a "well-known, amazing" actor, why is "Cool World" the only movie that I recall him being in.

Did Max Brooks have no creative control over this movie? They're like, "We'll give you more control on a 30 million budget, but if we up the budget to 100 million and throw in Brad pit, then we just want the name World War Z." Is that how it went down?

That's an ironic comparison. In Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein's monster is named Adam, and he's intelligent and articulate. However Boris Karloff made Frankenstein famous by acting as a nameless grunting golem. Since changing characteristics from book to screen is what makes a film awful as you imply, I'm assuming you thought James Whale's film was garbage too?

James Whale's film probably would have been considered shit were it not for the fact that its a BRILLIANT movie and its sequel 'Bride of Frankenstein' is one of the greatest movies ever made. As a work of art, it is at least on par with Mary Shelley's novel if not surpassing it.

It also helps that the monster is brought to life by Boris Karloff's subtle and stunning performance...not a blurry mass of bad CGI.

If you're going to diverge, you have to do it well. Marc Forster ain't that

For those that didnt read the book

let me fill you in. There is a very loose narrative going on. It follows a reports/writer for the UN as he goes around interviewing people around the world months after the epidemic. The book is organized to chronicle firsthand experiences through every step of the event from around the world.

It looks as though they are taking that narrative and changing it from months after the plague, to during the plague. You will see the narrator along side characters in the book from select scenes

It looks as though they are taking that narrative and changing it from months after the plague, to during the plague. You will see the narrator along side characters in the book from select scenes around the world. This makes the film much more approachable. Producing a film that follows the book as closely as people want it to, sounds pretty bad. The book was a series of short stories. There is no way a film could pick and choose which 2 minutes stories to combine to make a feature film. It would be better suited for a web series, but then it wouldnt get the attention and backing it deserves. This is a pretty good compromise from where i'm standing.

The book is fantastic. It chronicles everything from Patient Zero, to Clean up and even includes stories of (made up) celebrities and dogs. This movie does look different, but could pack just as much punch to the genre as the book did. This is easily the most ambitious zombie project ever filmed. And from the trailer alone, i really want to see it. I think as long as they ultimately just let the plague fade out on it's on, as it is in the book, they should be fine.

As for the effects, i get that the CGI could throw a few people off. But then again this is trying to show us something bigger than ever before. I thing the Dawn of the Dead remake had the largest zombie hoard ever filmed, and that was 2-3 hundred tops, this looks to include hoards of millions of dead guys, much more effects and creative insight has to go into the film. And again, i think the money was pretty well spent for what we're getting

From where I'm standing this doesn't look like a compromise at all. The only thing it seems to have in common with the book is a zombie threat, but even then the zombies aren't anything like the EXTREMELY DETAILED zombies in the book, they're not walkers either and instead seem to be mostly made up of sprinting awful CGI effects. I'm all for a bit of deviation from source material here and there, but this is ridiculous, its so far away from everything in the book that it's hilarious that it

This looks like the equivalent of someone buying the Harry Potter books, but instead of following Harry, Ron and Hermoine at a English magic school they follow Brad Pitt and his family at an alpaca farm in Indonesia....and they don't use magic and spells, instead they use guns......and Voldemort is a giant.

..and his name isn't Voldemort, it's Gary. Gary the Giant.

Like I said, a literal adaptation would be a slow and mottled mess of a film. Then we wouldn't get films like "Apocalypse Now", "There Will Be Blood" or "Forrest Gump". Those movies would've sucked if they worried about following the book to a T.I do see where the book influences the movie, but if your always worried about it being as good as the book, you're gonna constantly be sorely disciplined. Just separate it in your mind and judge the movie on its own, not how it compares to a book. I know I liked both "Hunger Games" and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" movies a lot more than I liked the books. This is still a wait and see. I think shitting on it this much and this early is just ignorant.

I'm not saying I want it exactly like the book, I don't mind the odd thing being changed here or there to fit a movie's running time, or a certain aesthetic or whatever. What I am saying is that it would be nice if it resembled it in even the tiniest fragment.

This isn't an adaptation, it's a complete and utter overhaul to the point of being unrelated entirely.

If it didn't want me to come with pre-concieved notions based on an existing property, then it shouldn't be wearing the name of

If it didn't want me to come with pre-concieved notions based on an existing property, then it shouldn't be wearing the name of that existing property. If it didn't want to make a film about a journalist interviewing a number of people about their past experiences surviving against the shambling hoardes of the undead...then it shouldn't have bought the rights to a book in which that is the central point and purpose. If they wanted to create a movie based on a US operative, a Brad Pitt driven CGI mess of an action movie, then they could have made this exact same movie and called it anything else other than World War Z.

to me it still looks like several aspects of the book made it too the film. Its really hard to tell from the trailer because they focus more on the action than the story, but it could actually have characters and scenes from the book in it with Brad Pitt right there next to the book's character. I really can't tell at this point. I hope it is, but from this trailer it's really hard to tell. If it comes out and that doesnt turn out to be the case, i will be just as disappointing as you. But

according to Max Brooks, the films script does a really good job of tying his story together. So it's a wait and see thing.

This had the potential to soar, and when there are more "why?"s than "I can't wait to see that!"s, you've got yourself a creative team that didn't pay attention.

I've read the book, and I get that they aren't using it for the script. That said, this looks more like a zombie parody movie than an actual zombie movie. Especially with the horrible Tsuzombie (patent pending) wave crashing down the street, or over the bus, or up the walls. I half expect Robert Duvall to have a cameo just so he can say "Zombies don't surf."

I'll wait for this one on Netflix.

Is that supposed to be clever? The Tsuzombie is a genius idea if you accept it in context. The very idea of a zombie already requires a massive amount of suspension of disbelief, might as well run with the idea.

I can't 'accept it in context' because I've actually taken physics classes and physiology classes, and what is shown on screen is contrary to what is actually possible. The book explained the horde of zombies better than this CGI physics impossibility. Then you're going to throw out a 'suspension of disbelief' or the old chestnut 'it's just a movie' argument. Don't worry about it not resembling the book, because to many who read it, it SUCKED!!!! This movie has equal potential of being bad, but I don't think it will be nearly as boring as the book was. Guess I won't be seeing many of you in the theater, because from the sound of it you'll be curled up in a wet blanket.

My apparently 'too-subtle' comment is specifically a critique on the terrible CGI.

In this film, we're meant to believe this is a real occurrence, yes? Like, this is actually happening to the characters? Well, with these 'zombies' looking like old video-game quality CGI, my suspension of disbelief is out the window.

I HAVE read the book. And yes, so far the movie doesn't look very much like what you'd expect. But why is that a problem? It's a summer tentpole action-horror flick. If you like that type of thing, who cares whether it's like the book or not? Judge the film on it's own merits, not whether it copies every minute detail and quotes every single line of dialogue from the book. Because guess what? When a movie does do that, you're gonna know how it ends.

Looks like they just paid millions of dollars for the name. I will go see it because I love movies but man, It would have been great to have seen what they could have done with the source material. And WTF is up with the crazy horde of "Zombies"? I didn't mind 28 Days Later or even the new Dawn of the Dead remake but this is just ridiculous.

Idk about this...

parts of it look sick, like the end with the plane breaking apart reminds me of lost. I love the scope of it too. But what seems to be killing it for me is. 1. these fuckin fast sprinting infected people (not zombies) the CG on them don't look to good at all I am getting a very I am legend feel on it and thats bad. 2. the other CG looks pretty terrible too, but I will be seeing it anyways. i wonder the rating. Prob be PG-13. It'll be nice if it gets an R and a nice 2hr runtime. Haven't have had

I've never read the book. Running zombies don't bother me; I enjoyed the hell out of 28 Days Later & the Dawn of the Dead remake. Still, gravity defying, aerobatic zombies are just too silly for me to accept. It's like sparkling vampires. Too much silliness like that kills a film for me. Trey Park & Matt Stone refer to this as "wearing a top hat on a top hat".

Plus this trailer was a mess. If I wasn't aware that this was supposed to be a zombie film, I would have been scratching my head

CONFLICTED...

...if the movie is based on any kind of plausible reality, then these zombies are just too CGI fast to be believed... I cant imagine that seeing them wont take you right out of the movie experience every time they show up on screen-- IF this movie was more fantasy or supernaturally based, then I could totally see it and it could make sense, but from what Ive seen of WWZ, its treated more as a physically grounded thing-- I DO understand the need to do something different and up the bar from all

You have to decide what KIND of movie you're making and stick with it-- or you BETTER have a damn good story and plot elements to explain how the exist in the film so that it will sit right with the viewer. --I really want to like this film, even though it doesnt follow the formula of the book at all--so I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens:)

I never read the book so I can't say anything towards the movie adapting anything right or wrong (from the sounds of it, it sounds like they didn't from other posts below me). But just purely basing it off of this trailer I think the film looks great. I'm just not sure considering the content how they are going to fit everything in this one film. Unless they play to make it a franchise.

Why no close up of any Zombies yet.

I've read the book and it looks like they've hacked the book into something different. I think if you were looking at this movie with the point of view from the book your going to be disappointed. This seems better suited as a stand alone movie. Is it me or they still haven't shown any zombies close up? I like the Dawn of the Dead/ 28 days zombies but this looks way over the top.

What?

Why even bother buying the rights to the book if you're not going to even try to adapt it at all? Nothing here looks, sounds or more importantly feels like the book. I'm not even THAT much of an elitist, it just boggles the mind as to why they'd bother purchasing existing rights at all.

I have no idea what I just watched but it certainly wasn't 'World War Z'. World War Z is a collection of harrowing post-war battle experiences against a slow moving, overwhelming menace. There's no singular

I have no idea what I just watched but it certainly wasn't 'World War Z'. World War Z is a collection of harrowing post-war battle experiences against a slow moving, overwhelming menace. There's no singular narrative or characters, only that each person had an individual encounter to tell during a fight against the undead. It would make for a great TV show, or a good series of anthology type movies.

This however looks like a trailer for a zombie GI Joe movie.....actually scratch that as I barely saw anything that actually looked like a zombie in it. This looked nothing like World War Z, and more like Brad Pitt vs a horde of video game cut-scenes.

Extra tidbit:

The word ADAPTATION says it all. They can do whatever they want, I'll judge the film, not what I think they should have done with the book. People complaining about big or small changes still haven't understand that movies and books cannont be compared.
