James Cameron says Terminator fans will love Terminator: Genisys

06.08.2015

There was a time when a James Cameron-less TERMINATOR film seemed preposterous, but here we are, on the brink of a third TERMINATOR movie without the original writer/director behind it. TERMINATOR: GENISYS has already polarized fans of the franchise with its casting and changing of the original story (a la J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK). This new film aims to reboot the franchise, being the first in a new trilogy, and you may be surprised to hear that James Cameron feels it's done exactly that. Taking time out to speak to IGN, the seminal director detailed what he liked about GENISYS and why it works.

James Cameron on TERMINATOR: GENISYS:

I didn't direct it. I didn't write it. I'm just a fanboy. I'm in a dark theater, the movie starts, and I start to see things I recognize. It's being very respectful of the first two films and then all of a sudden, it just swerves and now I'm going on a journey. I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated. Like, this is a renaissance.

Regarding the characters of GENISYS:

If you look at why the films became classics, they had characters that you like. The new film, which in my mind I think of as the third film, we see Arnold take the character even farther. Everyone responds to Sarah Connor. For women, I think she represents a kind of empowerment and yet there's a vulnerability there because that strength comes at a price. We went from in the first film the Terminator being the worst badass in history to in the second film him being almost a father figure. The idea of taking John Connor and flipping him to the bad guy, it's pretty cool because you got a rift against expectation. It's all about the twists.

If fans of the first two films will like GENISYS:

If you like the TERMINATOR films, you're gonna love this movie.

When I first read the plot for TERMINATOR: GENISYS (GENESIS, at that time), I was actually pretty keen on the idea. After all, when you deal with time travel, whatever events have transpired generally go out the window. However, it was upon the first few trailers and clips that dropped that made the movie feel "off" for me. James Cameron is known for speaking his mind and I believe he's genuine when he says that he likes TERMINATOR: GENISYS, but I have hard time believing I'll feel the same way. I would LOVE to be proven wrong. Here's hoping the finished product has a little more in store for us than we're led to believe.

TERMINATOR: GENISYS will open in theaters on July 1, 2015.

"If you like the TERMINATOR films, you're gonna love this movie."

If T1 and T2 are movies you "like", this new movie is something you will "love"? Wow, this movie is *better* than T1 and T2? BULLSHIT ALERT (as if one were needed).

I really think that Cameron has been brought out for damage limitation. I have nothing against the guy, but I think this is purely a strategic move.

This is a pass for me. I don't want all things renewed and twisted, I want for once to show the full scale resistance war of humans versus machines with Arnold's T-800 fighting alongside humans, that I thought Salvation was going to have, but instead was the aftermath and a complete bore-fest.

Wow, there's an awful lot of hate for Cameron on this site. Did you guys forget that he's the guy who directed The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2, The Abyss, True Lies, and Titanic? He's a world class filmmaker, so lets stop talking shit about him. His opinion is valid and holds water with me, and it should hold water with the rest of you as well. Also, if Cameron thought the movie was bad, he would say so. He publicly torn down Terminator: Salvation for being an average movie, so there's no

So we can't talk shit about him because he's made a handful of good movies in the past? I guess I wasn't supposed to notice how shitty Avatar was because he directed Aliens, huh?

People are still mad at him for making avatar so successful. or something stupid. The nerd rage here is contrary to everything else I've heard.

The Majority of people that have been seeing the test screenings have been really liking the film. I'm not shocked that Cameron thinks it's good either.

I couldn't tell you. I haven't been interested enough to watch the trailers. The idea is played out. We're 4 movies in, with each one bastardizing the storyline (and the concept of time) more. The last one should have been the chance to do something cool with it, but what it turned out to be was a barely-adequate brain-dead popcorn flick.

I'm done with the reboots and rehashes.

How does he stand to make money from the film succeeding? He didn't have anything to do with the making of this one and has not backend deals.

Just like fans of Avatar will like other shitty movies?

I think he's just lost touch with the drive and ambition that got him to where he is today.

Both him and Ridley Scott have fallen a long way from their early work. They're still proficient in the technical aspects of film making, but for some reason they've lost the ability to recognize what makes a good story.

When did Cameron turn into a whore?

Oh that's right, Avatar. I have zero interest in this film. Not only does none of it make any sense but to make John Conner the bad guy is just stupid and unimaginative. It's like, "what else haven't we done?". Plus Jai Courtney is NO FRAKKING Kyle Reese.

The only problems I have...

...is that the casting for John Conner isn't all that bad. I like Jason Clarke but it is damn obvious he doesn't mask his Australian accent. Really!! When did John Conner get an accent? Also, I feel they should've left all the John Conner is the bad guy out of the trailers. It's not a twist if you spoil it all in the trailer. Other than that I feel this will be a decent movie.

I have a feeling its going to be something he will be taking back in 5 years time & say it didn't have the spirit of the original 2. I always felt it was Sarah Connors story & it was her character with her monologues that kept it real and made us care. explains why I also enjoyed Sarah Connor chronicles as well
but I have my fingers crossed for this

For the Avatar profits!

I have very little hope for this thing. He is probably endorsing this for the same reason he endorsed "rise of the machines"...more money for him.

I'm keeping an open mind on this one. Alan Taylor did several Game of Thrones episodes and Thor 2, and he has yet to direct something that I didn't like. That said, I'm not sold on the casting of Kyle Reese and John Conner, and I doubt this will be anywhere close to being as good as the Cameron-directed films. But I do think there's a chance it could be halfway decent, perhaps better than 3 and 4 at least.

Not feeling this movie at all and I think it's just going to get lost in the shuffle of big blockbusters this year. When people look back at the films that came out this summer, I feel like no one will remember this one nor will it be memorbale (like Mad Max, or Age of Ultron).

Cameron: "In one word : Great. There was a small part of me that hoped it wasn't good - but another part of me hope'd it succeeded. And it did. And I'm so glad it did. Jonathon's made a great movie. Arnold's in great form. I really like what he's done with it".
