Kate Mara says plot for The Fantastic Four won't be based on the comics

Jul. 15, 2014by:

Previously Kate Mara said she picked up some Fantastic Four comics after she was cast as Sue Storm in Josh Trank's upcoming reboot, but apparently the director told Mara she shouldn't read them, since the movie won't be based on any of the stories from the comics. The actress revealed this little tidbit of information in a recent interview with Esquire Latinoamérica.

I've never been a fan of comics, I've never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn't necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn't do it because the plot won't be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it's very exciting to be part of a movie like this.

Kate Mara was also asked if it's a big responsibility being the new Invisible Woman.

I don't feel more responsibility with this role that I've felt with others. I understand that there are many fans of Fantastic Four and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that. We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I'm focusing on making her (Susan Storm) as real as possible.

It's not so much fans expect a lot from the actors and actresses appearing in a comic book movie, but the film itself, and right now many are bracing for the worst with THE FANTASTIC FOUR. While I'm not pleased with certain things about the project, I'm still going to give it a chance. The reboot will likely be quite different compared to the first two movies, but will it be so different it will turn off fans of the comics? We'll have to wait and see.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR will be in theaters on June 19, 2015.

Why bother ...

calling it the "Fantastic Four" then? Couldn't they just come up with new names? I mean, Just call them "The 4 Stooges" ...or the "Quad Confusion" so that we could avoid some ourselves.

Why Base it on the Comics?

Afterall theres only 60 years of stories to pull from. Just take the characters and make up your own bullsh%t. This movie will be a dumpster fire

Toby Kebbell as Doom, I'm really looking forward to. Some are comparing his Ape character to Ledger's Joker. Mara as Sue Storm should wash away the bad taste of the previous miscast actress. They want them to be real people to care about instead of cardboard cutouts, great. I hope they don't stray too far but it's much more important to tell a good story than to be too careful not to step on anybody's puritanical feelings.

Did anyone actually enjoy the other 2 FF movies?

People complain (rightfully so) that the ASM films were too soon to reboot and the first Spiderman movies were actually good (not 3). I don't see why people still complain when they try to make a shitty bunch of movies different rather than doing it over again. The quicker we forget about those terrible movies the better.

While the Josh Tranks' comments were more than a little odd, I don't really feel any childhood connection to the Fantastic 4, so I don't feel any expectation for it. I am surprised she didn't get some comics anyway, just for researching the type of character she will be playing; but she's the actress, right? I hope the movie is good, though to be honest, I'm not very invested in this one.

I don't get it.

Josh Trank apparently told Kate Mara not to read the comics because the movie won't be based off any of their story lines. That's like remaking Bram Stoker's Dracula, and telling your actors not to read the novel because the movie will have nothing to do with it.

I'm not judging anything until I see pics and a trailer, just because they're not using a pre-existing storyline, doesn't necessarily mean doom for the project. Do I have any expectations for this? No, but this article doesn't mean it's a nail in the coffin.

I don't even know where to start...

First off, it's like somebody WANTS this movie to fail. Is this like a bet or a triple-dog dare? It's one thing to tell an actress she doesn't HAVE to read the source material, but it's frakking gonzo to encourage her to actually avoid it. And to not even follow any of it? Did the 80's return and all the Exec's are hopped up on coke again? Did Warner Bros. take over production? And another thing, Mara, do you have any idea how ignorant you sound when you say you've never been a fan of something

What happened to it being based on the Ultimate books? It could be that Mara doesn't understand exactly what the director meant. It's still based on the comics, but it's not adapting a specific story arc. Most comic book movies take the idea of the characters from the books, but put them in a different situation. The Avengers movie wasn't based on a particular plot from the comics, for example, but it was still true to the characters. Batman '89 is another example - it strayed far from the

C'mon, ignoring the source material can't be all that bad. I mean look how World War Z turned out. Jonah Hex ignored their source material, and look how well that turned out too. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was awesome, and it too disregarded the source material. Remember Captain America from the 1990's? The one with the rubber ears? How about Dolph Lungren's The Punisher? Or Shaq's version of Steel? Remember that one time Ryan Reynolds played Green Lantern as a scared guy with no

Plus let's not forget the majesty that is Halle Berry as something called Catwoman.

But hey, what could go wrong?

Punisher - actually that one was a great action movie though - yes it wasn't exactly punisher, but it was one hell of a kick ass action film!

(I also like LXG - both the comic and film - but don't tell anyone)

@Preston, just because something makes money, doesn't mean it's good. Big Momma's House 1 & 2 made money, but that doesn't make them good. Besides, why tie up the source material in franchise rights if you're never intending to use them? Make your own version of a superhero movie, call it something else, and let the rights reverse back to a company that actually cares about telling the story the fans want to see about the characters they know.

Shit, Asylum films does it all the time with

Shit, Asylum films does it all the time with crap like Transmorphers, etc. I'd like to see these characters done in a live action movie, correctly, rather than as an experiment by Josh Trank.

Oh and lastly, you can apply this to any film based on any kind of book. Granted, FF have longer histories, but I'd bet most actors - even directors - don't read the book their film is "based" on. And hopefully you've learned "based" means nothing. Isn't deliver us from evil "based" on a true story? TX chainsaw was, but only about the serial killer who ate parts of his victims (and maybe wore some skin...can't remember. I'm sure it can easily be found), not some red neck inbred who chased

Preston - I realize that and I'm a medium level comic nerd. Saying that, I don't think there are many mrs invisible purists. Also, as a lover of a lot of the big stuff, if you read it long enough, it's hard to be a purist of a comic character, it's easier to be a purist of a version, arc, or writer. Their are dozens of different versions of the Joker, more of Bats. In one version Bruce is dead and his dad is bats. Then all the ppl who take the mantle after Bruce. But there's different versions of Bruce. With batman, I think you can change anything you want except that his parents, good ppl, were murdered in front of him, and he's really smart. I think you could make a version where he isn't a millionaire and doesn't have access to all those sources - and wasn't there one where he worked in a garage? Or was that Aronofsky's script? But he can be black, a woman, whatever. Wolverine has changed a lot too. He's been one of the horsemen, he's been a terrible bad guy when he only had one hand (at least when x force went back there recently). Think ab what all has happened to the Boy Scout Cyclops? And the change of magneto? That's why I like thunderbolts a lot. But almost every big super hero (especially marvel's) has at one point in time gone bad bc they are possessed or whatever. And then there's all the multiverses and what ifs like bats being green lantern. And the tweaks were the entire point if new 52 and marvel universe - to update and make fresh. I thought they did a great job updating iron man 1 to the recent war. But every character has been written by so many ppl, it's almost easier to be a purist of the writer. And I'm not sure there's a lot of F4 purists, especially of individual members. If so, I don't hear much from them. I don't see their merchandise of shirts and stuff in stores. I'm sure they are there, but I think this is mainly just a mob hate thing. They've prolly seen the badast 2 movies, heard about the I releasable one, and read 10 comics. That's it. So they are fakers on too of that, bc I didn't hear a huge revolt on websites when they left the F4 title at the beginning of Marvel Now - most seemed like it was a tweak that had potential.

There are reasons why I had to see Transformers...

Bealzf. your whole comment is ignorant. And this is coming from a black man who wants to see the white Johnny Storm he grew up with for the past 30+ years. Jordan is better suited for Patriot, the blood decendant of the original Capt America.

Purists believe any changes to a story first need to happen in print before they can happen on screen. Slow to accept or realize that more people nowadays are introduced to these characters through film than they are a comic. The films are meant to attract a larger audience than just fanboys and comic enthusiasts.

Directors of GOTG and x men told actors not to read the comics, banned them, bc they weren't following the comics. Many actors choose to ignore previous versions of their character so it won't be imprinted in their mind. It's the same strategy as above. This isn't a great example bc the Burton movie wasn't good, but Depp never saw the original Wonka. Do you think Pine read any Jack Ryan books as perpetration for that film, which wasn't based on a book. He may have, but only bc they were

You think Craig and others read Fleming's novels? Any of those characters. Or Matt Damon and Bourne? I think the Bourne movies are a bit over rated, but they definitely don't have anything in common with the books except name, and a badass government agent with amnesia trying to find his past, and the gov't looking for him. This is what objective thinking is, and requires (I even want to say I remember reading Bale and Jackman said they never read the comics but i could be wrong - CHRIS EVANS SAID HE DIDNT READ COMICS). You have to consider all these things - these Hollywood norms - before you say stupid shit.

fact - Heath Ledger said "I fucking hate comics." And most consider him to be the best Joker (I don't, but I am just one man).

I think you are getting a bit overly tense on this issue. The main problem is that by announcing that they didn't read the comic is kind of spitting in the face of the comic. or at least that is the way it is being taken.

I don't think that Craig read all the bond novels (maybe he did tho, as they are popular in his neck of the woods) and even if Chris Evans

I don't think that Craig read all the bond novels (maybe he did tho, as they are popular in his neck of the woods) and even if Chris Evans didn't read comics, someone on the production team probably did or something.

I think the film makers here are just trying to shy away from the source material and you know that doesn't go well with fans. I mean I just want an enjoyable FF movie that is at least close to the comics in some form. Doesn't have to copy a single story, but something close to the feel of the books and characters.

Like I don't think Dark Knight is a perfect Batman adaptation, but its a good movie and is similar enough to Batman that I recognize it as Batman and I don't roll my eyes at it. 5/5 movie on its own terms, but probably a 3/5 movie comparing it to batman comics. I am ok with that, and I have 30 long boxes filled.

PS - I am 36 and I saw TF4 opening day.

I hate TF1-3, but I enjoyed 4 for several reasons. I don't just hate on movies for no reason. I really don't like transformers 1-3, but I actually really enjoyed 4 - go figure.

my favorite film is Conan the Barbarian (arnie of course - very UNDERRATED FILM) and my second is 2001 a space odyssey (which I believe to be the best film ever made.)

Why not call it another movie is an ok argument, but we don't know what this is. They could pull from a bunch of comics, not one. Or change origins up a bit, which as I said below, happens constantly. But, it's impossible to know now, and I doubt she really knows anyway

But if you went and saw it, take a moment and realize that small contribution to the film industry you made. It's fine if you went to see T4, but if u did, u shouldn't be able to make comments on these sites, or at the very least, have to announce that before hand so that can be taken into account.
Iron C, Netforce, and some the others - y'all should be ashamed. I'm surprised no soloist yet, but he's prolly on his way (and I've concluded he's either waay younger than 18, or he is Armond White). Really though, wishing someone to fail? These 4 actors and this director have shown serious talent. And worst PR ever? Where do YOU love Iron C? They don't teach you critical thinking/analysis? Or you just ignored it? This movie is almost literally a year away - 11 months. What fucking movie had PR a year previous? I have seen no footage of any movie next year (even in spring, that I can think of - not even for Xmas releases - nothing past interstellar that I can think of). Unless you are or know big wigs, you've seen what I have for next summer's movies - nothing. There's been some leaked pics for Star Wars, A2, and a trailer that had no footage. The only official stuff you've seen are some photos for sup v bats and FF7 (2 huge movies, 1 bc of characters/DCU, and the other the death of a lead in a huge franchise). As far as I know, none of these actors have anything coming out, so they aren't doing press for another movie and getting asked FF questions - like Affleck will come Gone Girl rounds. I don't even think any of you even really love the FF as characters. Put the pitchfork down. You all have this ignorant hate mob mentality. Iron C, did you really believe it when actors say they loved the source material and read it constantly? And how difficult is mrs invisible of a character? And god forbid, the race of a character that'll be cgi half the time change. It's not enough that you have to keep your characters white, but you take most Asian characters and make them white too. It's not like this is new, oh wait, miles morales, Nick fury, fucking superman was black recently in the 52. The 5 leads in this (dr doom = #5) and the director have all been sensational in something - 2 of them have been award worthy (Fruitvale Station, Spectacular Now - but I have a feeling most of you didn't catch those). And based on a comic? No comic book movie that I can think of has really stuck closely to the source material. Watchmen is prolly the closest, but it's a bit different bc it's not on going (same for 300). DOFP is a quick choice, but by "based," all they did was take the structure of "a character goes back in time to prevent an assignation of someone to prevent a Sentinal led apocalypse." That's it. Every detail is pretty much different. Movies pull from a lot of the comics, but no movie really follows a certain arc of the comics. They often change little things all the time - Spidey and his parents and web slingers, avengers and Ultron, so much stuff. It's really no different than the comics, like the ultimate version of stuff, that tries to make old material fresh. And perhaps most important, unless it's changed in the past 6 months, the fantastic four comic DOES NOT feature the 4 know characters. It is LITERALLY a Katy Perry type pop star wearing a Thing/iron man type suit/armor. Are you really saying that a fantastic black actor can't portray a fairly 2 dimensional character on film that's always been white? I can't think of one that can kinda pull off geekish and is young on top of my head, but would a good black actor cast as Bruce banner really ruin a hulk film? I think the racial aspect that's added could make him more interesting. There has not been one single reason to think this movie is bad other than Fox is making it and they made the last 2. The only other valid argument is that "this isn't the fantastic four," which I can kind of agree, despite the characters in the title now, but I'd still respond with "who are the F4?" All I know is I saw chronicle and knew I wanted to see that guys next movie, and same with 3 films of the actors (rock n Rolla and the two mentioned above, though I know he hasn't done much since). The other two actors are solid too. We know nothing about this movie. Idk if it's gonna be good, I just use critical thinking and come to the conclusion that the director and actors have mainly been involved in quality stuff (yes there were some obvious pay day shit too), and fox has a terrible record with non x men superhero films. You may think I'm over reacting bc this is just a movie, and it is, but the behavior and ignorance some of you are displaying is a symptom of a much larger problem that's overtaken America, a tea party mentality, which lacks critical objective thinking, and creates an aggressive mob mentality. Shame is the word I'm thinking of.
And I only included a few examples of this. I could so many more.

Pathetic...and scary

No, not the news, the majority of the commentators below.
How many of you honestly saw Transformers 4? And saw it on opening weekend? Let's raise the bar kind of high to 18, and if your under 18 years old, no voting.
Are you really saying that a fantastic black actor can't portray a fairly 2 dimensional character on film that's always been white? every time i hear or read something obout the F4 movie i feel like making a facepalm... i'm really not interested in this movie because of all the bad publicity and plain old stupid decisions they make! Don't bother to read the comics? Why not? Maybe, just maybe, we will all be blown away by the trailer and forget about all this bad publicity but for now i am not feeling this movie AT ALL!!!

Why are people upset?

If this film isn't based on any existing source material that means they've come up with something original. Is that really a problem? I'm curious to see what they're going to attempt to do to make this seem more grounded.

Although I really don't like the casting, the fact that she never read a comic before doesn't really matter IMO. I don't think people like Ian McKellen, Anthony Hopkins or Michael Caine read a lot of comics before they signed on to their respective roles. As long as they do the research after and respect the material, everything will be fine.

But when the director is telling you to stop said research because the movie strays too far from the comics, then you have a problem!

Why not just do something original if it isn't going to be based on the existing comics? Ugh. Calling it one thing and doing something else? Just do something else!

This is terrible

I am definitely a proponent of the "wait and see" approach. Never do we have all the knowledge and perspective that the studios do for these projects as they make them their own and update the characters. Multiple times have fans cried at leaked news only to be surprised and thrilled at the final product. This is why I reserve judgment until I at least see a trailer. Having said that, this news makes it hard for me to stick to that approach. How can you have a comic book movie that completely

Even the Ghost Rider sequel had elements from the comics. I'm trying not to judge but they are making it so hard.

Fantastic Four had a 100 million dollar budget, made 175 million box office. Fantastic Four:The Rise of the Silver Surfer had 130 million dollar budget made 157 million box office. I wonder how much reboot is spending? Let's hypothetically say it is 150 million dollar budget, any chance it breaks even?

Kind of makes sense

I can see the appeal of going with your own story, you don't have any expectations to meet. Also film is not comic books, they are different genre and sometimes things in comics seem silly on the big screen, and if it's a different genre why can't it have its own story.

Yeah, I've always wanted a Batman movie that was based on The Birdcage instead. He could be a gay nightclub owner who fights criminals at night because he's been in the business so long he just can't stay awake during the day.

That would be super-awesome!

I appreciate the honesty.

And... I actually like the casting. More money is generated from movies than comics so I fully support them creating their own story.

Wow

I can maybe understand Trank telling them not to read an of the comics because they won't be based on a specific plot, but telling them not to read one AT ALL? LIke, not even to get an idea of who their character is and how they act? Ugh. this sounds worse and worse.

So if you're not been basing this on the comics anymore then give the rights back to marvel so we can get a FF movie fans actually get excited for. This all seems like a joke. They're doing so many things wrong I keep waiting for someone to tell me it's a decoy

considering the changes they are making and the fact that the director said they are doing an original story, I'm not terribly surprised he told her not to read the books...But still, shouldn't she know past incarnations?
I mean, Rise of the Silver Surfer set the bar pretty low, but so far it seems that's even going to be a challenge for them. I'm still willing to give it a try, but man is that scale starting to tip

Aside from the terrible casting and terrible direction, the PR campaign for this has to be historically bad. Not a single thing said by the stars, the film maker, the studio leading up to this has generated any positive buzz. It seems like whenever anybody opens their mouth about FF it slides deeper into "hate" from core fans of Marvel products. The PR campaign is ridiculously inept. There's no control, no direction or plan to improve expectations. This is going to be a career killer for

Another flaw in casting. Why would you cast someone to portray a comic book hero who has never read a comic book? That would be a prerequisite in the vetting process.
Seriously worst cast film ever. Like the casting agents must have thrown darts at a dart board or something. She is focusing on making a Fantastic person a real person. She doesn't get it, the film makers don't get it. The Fantastic Four aren't real people, they are fantastic, freaks, comic book heroes.

The really ironic thing is that Jordan gets the majority of negative reaction to his casting, but he's the only actual comic-book fan (and particularly of the FF & Johnny Storm) of the bunch.

He may turn out to be the best part of this crap-fest.

So Fantastic four NOT based on the comics

No Human Torch
No Thing
No invisible woman
No mr fantastic

Just people with the same names who call themselves the fantastic four.

Josh Trank telling her not to read the comics? She says shes never been a fan or read the comics. Wouldnt you WANT her to read them so she can at least get a bit of a grasp of the concept of her character and her relationship to the others?

Good.
I'm glad its not based on any comic - that way I can pretend it's not really an FF movie.
Besides, why should she read the comic when no one else involved in this production is reading one.

Too bad Marvel doesn't have the rights to their first team of characters they created. Not to mention the fact that everyone seems to be making shitty movies on them too.
I guess FF2 will end up being the best FF movie we ever get? (actually I don't mind that movie except for the terrible
