Makoto Shinkai’s anime masterpiece Your Name finally gets a U.S. trailer

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

I have to admit that I'm a little ashamed of myself for the way in which I've been ignoring anime these past few years. The list of films and shows I have yest to check out is sickening and I really do hope to rectify the situation as soon as my schedule allows. Now, it looks as if I'll be adding another title to my ever-growing list of shame after watching this visually-splendorous new trailer for Makoto Shinkai's YOUR NAME. I've not seen Shinkai's JOURNEY TO AGARTHA or THE GARDEN OF WORDS, but his 2004 release THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS is truly spectacular, and his 2007 release, 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND, is quite mesmerizing as well.

Believe it or not, YOUR NAME is actually the highest-grossing anime of all time with a worldwide total of $328 million in receipts. Now, beginning on April 7, 2017 the film is set for a limited stateside release thanks to Funimation Films – complete with a dub and subtitles for all English-speaking anime fans to enjoy! The film's plot features a body-swapping scenario in which two strangers find themselves linked in a bizarre way. The question is: When a connection forms, will distance be the only thing to keep them apart?

From what I've read online, YOUR NAME is being hailed as a remarkable achievement in both story and animation. The trailer has this film looking positively gorgeous (much like all of Shinkai's other releases), even if the pop tune playing in the background isn't to my liking. Regardless, I'm totally going to seek this movie out when it's released on April 7, 2017 and I think you should too!
