Marvel to skip this year's SDCC; WB will hold a "significant presentation"

06.09.2015

San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Banner

Looks like James Gunn wasn't fibbing a few months ago when he said Marvel Studio won't be at San Diego Comic-Con 2015; Deadline has learned Marvel won't have a major presence at this year's SDCC, confirming part of our spoilery Marvel report from earlier this year. The reason why is pretty simple: Kevin Feige and company just don't have anything new to show at the event.

But it's not all bad news from Deadline: the site also says they've heard Warner Bros. will be holding a "significant presentation" to introduce Zack Snyder's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD, which are both due in theaters next year. While SUICIDE SQUAD is still filming, it is possible a teaser trailer could be screened during SDCC 15, and a new BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer will more than likely also premiere at the event.

Are you bummed that Marvel won't be at SDCC 15, or do you think Warner Bros. will make up for Marvel's absence with their presentation?

The next Marvel Studios film to be released will be ANT-MAN on July 17, 2015, and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.

Its kind of strange that the largest comic book company in the world isn't going to be at the largest comic convention in the world. Its not a great look, and to me it kind of comes off as lazy. And I don't believe that they don't have anything to show, they could still be hyping Ant-Man or having a panel about Civil War or something. Its just odd.

I hope it's not the sign of the future, and that they completely forget SDCC just because they "made it". Kinda a bummer if so. Looking forward to SDCC this year , can't wait

not surprised

Not surprised with Disney's convention coming up. With GOTG 2 on the horizon, along with Dr. Strange and Civil War coming next spring, there's going to be some big stuff coming with (at the very least) Civil War.
Can't wait.

Disney has their own comvention

Disney already announced that they will Be holding presentations for Marvel and Star Wars at their own Convention D23 in august. It makes sense for Disney because why be apart of someones else convention and sell tickets for them to have your announcements when you have your own conventions and you can sell tickets for your own.

TDK Flashbacks

I'm just thinking back to when The Dark Knight was at SDCC. I think its safe to say the viral marketing campaign of the Dark Knight has to go down as one of the best things to ever happen at SDCC. If WB/DC do anything like that, and make their presence interactive, they will rule SDCC for sure this year.

No probs at all.

We have until next year until Civil War after Ant-Man so I don't want any more of that spoiled. But here's a warning for you Warner Bros, Enough of the shit like spending a fortune on creating teasers for a miniscule few who show up in San Diego, Exclusives are fine but the rest of the world can't fit into a small exhibition hall and they are the ones paying your wages.

I am not bummed. Let's give Marvel a breather, they have a LOT of work to do.
I want to see what DC has planned. Let them have the spotlight, they have been working on Batman Vs Superman Dawn Of Justice for a LONG time.

Totally fine with this. Marvel is well known regardless of its presence at SDCC. This is WB/DC's year.

It's fine that Marvel won't be there. If they have nothing to show, then there's no point in being there just to cram the Marvel brand down everyone's throat. We'll still know they exist if they aren't at SDCC.

That being said, with Marvel out of the picture this year. This is WB/DC's time to shine. They need to bring something extraordinary to the SDCC this year for BvS and SS. This is basically their biggest chance to establish their footing in the superhero movie genre.

This is kinda the cost of their October event where they releaved Phase 3 at the El Capitan Theater. I think Feige & Co. knew all along that SDCC 15 wouldn't be in the cards if that was the case, and that's fine. The only part of this I find surprising is that Cap 3 is due in theaters before next summer, so this is the last big event to build hype way beforehand. Yes, there are other "con"s such as NYCC, but none on the same level as SDCC. Perhaps Marvel will hold some other kind of press

I think at this point, Marvel knows they'll get a fan following on any of their properties. They've become so popular that they don't necessarily NEED to debut things at events like SDCC. Can you honestly say that you don't think people will pay attention to the release of Civil War b/c Marvel does not present something at an event like SDCC?

MickLoud, yea fair point, and I mostly agree with you. But no, I didn't say people won't pay attention to Civil War just because it's not promoted at an event lol. That's the extreme version of what I said. But at the same time, it's not like they don't even need to release trailers or posters for Civil War. I'm just saying you'd think they'd want Civil War to be front and center at an event as it's their big movie of 2016. But you're right, they certainly don't NEED it.

That's fine. After the somewhat disappointing Age of Ultron, I'm more excited and curious to see what DC has up their sleeves with their upcoming films.

Wow!! Your standards must be like and 11 out of 10 or something. Age of Ultron was in no way disappointing at all. It was a well written and good setup for the up and coming phase three.

Agree with Salarian. But Soloist is entitled to not liking it. There's a difference between not liking a movie and a movie being disappointing. Age of Ultron had over the top action, plenty of humor, awesome visuals and set pieces. There are plenty of individual "personal taste" reasons not to like it (as with any film), but it's not like it was lackluster. Our generation is so spoiled haha, calling movies like Age of Ultron disappointing.

I'm a die hard fan of both Marvel, and DC (more so DC), but just felt somewhat disappointed after Age of Ultron after being blown away by Winter Soldier, and especially Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a good film but I was expecting something a bit more grand considering where they were storyline wise and the villain they were facing.

Who knows, maybe I need to watch it again.

You are such a bandwagon jumper, you gave praise for Age of Ultron earlier in other posts as one of the best movies this year. Make up your mind dude, think for yourself.

Definitely not alone, Age of Ultron was really disappointing for me cause the potential was there to make it one of the best CBM and it all fell flat. It had moments of awesomeness sprinkled through out it but a film as awhole it failed to accomplish what it could have been.
