Updated: Race scribes to pen Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow sequel

Edge of Tomorrow 2 Christopher McQuarrie Tom Cruise Emily Blunt Banner

UPDATE: Christopher McQuarrie took to Twitter to clarify that he would NOT be directing the sequel and that Doug Liman was set to return. See below:

The word from Deadline is that RACE scribes Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have come onboard to write the script for the EDGE OF TOMORROW sequel. The duo also penned the screenplay for Geoffrey Sax's FRANKIE & ALICE, and were hired to do a rewrite of Sony's big screen adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel The Gray Man.

Tom Cruise is expected to reprise his role from the original film, however it's possible that Emily Blunt will also return for the follow-up. And although last year Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the first movie, seemed skeptical that a sequel will actually happen, the site is also reporting that Cruise's JACK REACHER and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION director is attached to helm EDGE OF TOMORROW 2.

Obviously the film is still a long ways off, since there isn't even a script yet, and there's also no guarantee that the sequel will get made, but I have a feeling that I'm not the only one who is definitely up for another EDGE OF TOMORROW movie.

Don't care for a sequel. The first was an overrated bore that borrowed from about every other sci-fi flick under the sun. For my money, as derivative as Oblivion was, it was a better Cruise sci-fi offering.

As long as Liman, McQuarrie and especially Blunt come back. Love Tom Cruise, but it was Blunt that made that movie what it was. I'm good with Cruise and another Reacher movie though.

I guess EOT sequel is based on Tom's idea. I am eager to see how they will continue the story.Jack Reacher 2,The Mummy,MI6,Top Gun 2,Tom's got very interesting line-up of films

This is one of the only movies I'd watch a hangover 2 sequel too, but in another part of the world.

EOT was a perfectly crafted movie, with great performances by everyone and a nicely complete story. I liked it better than the book, in fact. A sequel will be solely another Hollywood attempt to suck money out of our pockets and will very probably be a stinker.

One of my favorite things about Edge of Tomorrow was that it sealed things up very nicely, no need for a sequel. Any follow-up to it is going to seem forced I think. If Emily Blunt returns I'll see it but if it's just Cruise I won't have much interest at all. It's good that McQuarrie and Liman will be involved, it's just kind of hard to get excited to a sequel to a movie that ended perfectly.

I usually love sequels, and I really love this movie (favourite of 2014), but I really don't think it's necessary to have a sequel
