Rejoice! AMC has greenlit the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul!

09.11.2013

If you are sad as I am that BREAKING BAD is coming to a close in just a few short weeks, then this news should be a bright spot in your cloudy day: AMC has officially greenlit the pilot for the spin-off series BETTER CALL SAUL starring Bob Odenkirk!

Deadline says the show will take place before Saul Goodman's introduction in the second season of BREAKING BAD and will not be as dark as the acclaimed series. It will also be an hour-long rather than a traditional thirty minute sitcom. This opens the door for the show to explore all sorts of seedy criminal elements from the New Mexico setting that has been the home for all five seasons of BREAKING BAD.

Goodman was originally created as comic relief but has since been involved in some of the darker scenes in the series. Creator Vince Gilligan had this to say about the spin-off last year:

“I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff. I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”

The fact that the show is a prequel leaves the character's fate ambiguous leading into the final episodes of BREAKING BAD, but whatever happens it is nice to know the universe inhabited by these characters will carry on. Expect more news as BREAKING BAD comes to an end.

Extra Tidbit: I guess he doesn't go to Belize

I'm guessing they went the prequel route so they could bring back Mike & Gus. Which, needless to say, would be seventeen kinds of awesome.

Beyond excited for this show. Fingers crossed that Bill Burr stays on and we get Huel too. They would make a great comedic trio. I literally have no worries if those guys are on board

I'd rather see a Badger and Skinny Pete spinoff.

I can see this working as a dark comedy.. Saul's the kind of guy who's probably seen all sorts of crazy and depraved situations, so there's plenty to mine from.

If it's going to be half as good as Breaking Bad then I think we'll be fine.

I'm just wondering if its going to be a case of the week show or an actual season long storyline. Hopefully the latter.

Could evolve from a case of the week to a full story. Kinda like how a lot shows do it. Could be a case a season. Who knows?

I love Saul's scenes in this but don't think I could watch an entire series with him as the star. Maybe Kevin Costner can play his evil twin or something.

A Gus prequel spinoff...now that would be truly awesome. This could be a great companion piece to Breaking Bad. Glad it's on AMC with Vince Gilligan too.

I think I'd prefer that they didn't delve too much into Gus's background. I guess it would ruin his bad assness in a similar way to Darth Vaders prequels did.

I'm not sad Breaking Bad is ending

It's stayed on point, with a beginning, middle, and end. If it just continued for the sake of profits, that would be sad. It's a great show, I'm looking forward to seeing the final episodes, and then seeing what else the producers do next - including this.

Nice!! This I want to see. Having the show set before the events of season two and onwards could mean anyone who did die could show up. Lots of places to go here.

Re:Tidbit

He could still go to Belize. Knowing Saul dies or how he dies wouldn't affect this series. It's simple: The series doesn't establish much of a time frame and then ends when Saul gets in cahoots with the Breaking Bad characters, his previous relationships withstanding (like Mike Ehrmantraut)
