Riddick sequel will be an origin story; TV companion series in the works

12.18.2015

Earlier this week Vin Diesel gave a casting update for XXX 3 by revealing that Samuel L. Jackson will be back for the planned movie, and the actor once again took to Facebook to announce that he and director David Twohy are aiming to start production on FURIA, the fourth installment in the RIDDICK film series, in early 2017.

In the video below, Diesel also said they've been talking about doing an origin story for Riddick, while Twohy is confident that the next entry will be rated R.

It's also been announced that Diesel has signed a multi-year, first-look production deal for his One Race banner with Universal Television, and that one of the first projects as part of the agreement will be a spinoff television series titled Merc City, which "will follow the Mercs and Bounty Hunters of the Riddick Universe."

“In addition to being a huge star for our feature division, Vin is a true creative force as a producer. After sitting down with him and his team at One Race Television, it’s clear he will now also be an incredible asset to both the network and our television studio” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “We feel really fortunate to be in business with, not only an international powerhouse, but a truly thoughtful and passionate producer.”

There's no guarantee though that either project will actually happen and, to be honest, I'm not sold on the idea of a Vin Diesel-less companion TV series, but I'm sure fans of the Riddick franchise will be (mostly) happy with this news.

Who even wants this?

I'm definitely on team NO. Vin Diesel has shown he can't carry a movie without the Fast/Furious crew.

I was not a fan of finding out Riddick was a "Furyan." In fact, he was never cooler than in Pitch Black, when all we knew was he was some sort of poor street kid who could kill stuff real good. Some knd of Man With No Name. I realize it's a little late to stick the cat back in the bag, but why offer insult to injury?

Pacifier 2?

Why doesn't Vin take an approach more like the Rock and revive dying franchises like GI Joe instead of continuing to try and revive his? I mean what stupid producer would give him $ for any of these movies besides fast 8?

And I'm done

I was one of the crazy people that actually enjoyed Riddick but I just can't behind this. We don't need more fucking origin for Riddick, the Escape From Butcher Bay game served as that. So did the cartoon movie that came when Chronicles of Riddick came out. We don't need more of fucking Riddick's fucking background story. Push the fucking story forward. This is just plain laziness.

After The Last Witch Hunter has flopped, I doubt if this Riddick sequel would take flight.

Please no "Origin-Story". More often than not there are secrets revealed nobody wanted to know at all (like Highlander 2 or X-Men;Wolverine). I would rather follow the adventures of that diabolical and enigmatic badass criminal from "Pitch Black" than the Origin Story of some spiritual Chosen one Superhero in the making

Yeah they were flops, but they're still fun popcorn flicks, and Vin Diesel is a class act so I'm interested in seeing more.

I'd prefer to see his character move forward in a sequel, rather than an origin story though.

My guess is that Vin would probably guest star in the series from time to time.

I don't get it

Did I miss something here? The last time I checked, the Riddick 2 and 3 movies flopped at the box office. Why would any studio bank roll another film and a TV show?

According to Wikipedia, Riddick made a decent profit and good home video sales. I did think the same thing though.
