Rumor: Could Abrams be seeking to move The Force Awakens to this summer?

This latest Star Wars rumor is every fanboy's wet dream come true: As reported by iKwiz and MoviePilot, word is that J.J. Abrams is looking to have Disney bump up the release date of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS to this summer. The reasoning? To prevent any more spoilers or leaks from ruining audience expectation before the film hits.

Now, don't get me wrong, the reasoning is sound. If the film would be ready to go, why NOT release what's sure to be one of the highest grossing films of the year during the months when audiences are more inclined to flock to theaters? The biggest reason would be that of the summer release schedule. As you no doubt have noticed, release dates for big-budget films are generally pegged YEARS in advance. This is done systematically to ensure the biggest box office gain for a film. Not only does a studio want to space out their movies to give each one a shot to earn their nut, but they also are conscious of the other films being released by rival studios.

So what's hitting this summer? If we're looking just at Disney, they have Marvel's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hitting May 1st, TOMORROWLAND May 22nd, Pixar's INSIDE OUT June 19th, and Marvel's ANT-MAN July 17th. As you can see, they've spaced out their movies just enough to give each a shot in theaters. That's not even taking into account the other films being released this summer. One could argue that an August release might be in the cards, despite coming in at the end of the season. On the flip side, if you look at the December 18th date, STAR WARS is pretty much clear of any film that may pull in the same audience, leaving it to rake in the Christmas dollars, as well as the new year market (which AMERICAN SNIPER did a hell of a job doing).

So could THE FORCE AWAKENS be moved to this summer? Sure, stranger things have happened. It's also not J.J. Abrams' call. While the time of year is a huge factor, I think we're all pretty confident that STAR WARS is going to make bank, regardless of the release date. The nerd in me would love to see Star Wars return to the summer, but I'm also not holding my breath.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is, as of now, scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2015.

I keep hearing that Ant-Man and Star Wars might swap release dates, I hope that ends up being true.

Since Marvel is reworking its movie schedule anyway after the Spidey-deal Disney could easily swap Star Wars with Ant Man which seems to be getting a relatively short postproduction phase anyway - at least in comparison to the other CGI heavy blockbusters.
On the other hand I don't even think the usual rules apply for The Force Awakens. Doesn't matter what other movies are running when it hits theaters. It is Star Wars and that is enough to obliterate them all.

This is bad reporting on the part of Joblo. Other sites like Jumpkickpunch and mania are reporting that Disney is going to swap the release dates for Ant-Man and Star Wars. Meaning that The Force Awakens will come out on July 17th and Ant-Man on December 17th.

If ready, then DO IT!

I, for one, agree with the inability to prevent leaks. Also, the anticipation is killing me so I'd be pumped knowing it will be here in a few months rather than the end of the year. Yet, who gets screwed over? Ant-Man? I could see Inside Out because those movies seem better suited for later in the year, imo. MI:V has already been pushed up and I'm excited for that too. Everyone should know to steer clear of at least 2 weeks of a post Star Wars release. Oh the fan boy in me this morning is

Probably not, but sad to say anticipation winds up almost being more exciting than the movies themselves due to the constant studio jockeying, interference, etc...

This would piss off Tina Fey and Amy Poehler...

They only decided to make their new movie if it opened against star wars...

Not to mention it would ruin one of the best jokes so far in this season of Parks and Rec.

Golden opportunity.

Blow the notion of what month means anything to the movie goer out of the water. Back when theater's mattered it made sense that certain seasons, months and dates were factored into a films release. No more. Disney has all of these movies dumping in the summer, why not release Star Wars in August (normally a dump month for small summer hopefuls) and completely destroy the notion of what August is in Summer? If the movie is ready, do it.

And this is where not bothering to watch an awards show can cause problems

Who actually knows what JJ Abrams said when he was presented with his honor or whatever it was? Anyone, besides the people who physically attended? How the hell are we stuck with second hand information on this in the first place?? I mean any schmuck could put words in his mouth or take some off-handed comment he made to someone off the record during the red carpet walk. Then all you have to do is hope no other news organization is there to contradict your claims. I mean what are the

Could Abrams really make an intention like that so public, and yet at the same time completely overlooked by everyone but a two-bit entertainment site I've never heard of, whose primary focus is apparently quizzes? Especially when his short interview with Collider was analyzed to hell!? I doubt it very much.

theres only like 3 movies this year I want to see this year other than Star Wars so I'd have no problem with this.

Star Wars is a movie made for summer not Christmas, heck they did it for Mission:Impossible, so why not? Leave Xmas for the Oscar bait movies.

You've got toy tie ins, and video games, and TV series spinoffs, and schedules for interviews... all kinds of sideline stuff running on timetables set around December.

Old debunked rumor is olllllddddd.

No way is this true, JJ Abrams had to fight (and almost didn't do the movie) to have the movie released in December because he didn't feel there was enough time for Post when Disney wanted it out this summer.

Boy do you have it assbackwards or what. Originally Disney wanted Summer 2015...it was taking too long so they pushed it to Dec 2015. JJ BEGGED for it to be Summer 2016 and Disney said NOPE Dec 2015. and thats what it has been

I don't see where we contradict eachother.
JJ fought for a later release date, Disney compromised and gave him December. (Which admittedly is not what he wanted, but it's all he could get)

Are you kidding me?

The just finished shooting the movie in December, the amount of CGI work that still has to be completed will take them until the end of the year to finish.

Not to mention that J.J. Abrams already asked to bump the film to summer 2016 but Disney gave them December 2015. He would not try to release the movie early and compromise its quality just to avoid spoilers.

No way this would happen. I would rather see the film be released in December since the summer is already crowded enough with a lot of great films coming our way.
