Spoiler: Here is what Nathan Fillion's Guardians of the Galaxy cameo may be

06.24.2014by:

With the confirmation that Nathan Fillion would have a "fun" cameo in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, everyone and their mother had a theory as to who the FIREFLY star could be playing. Some ventured to guess Nova Prime while others thought he may play his character of Mal Reynolds within the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY universe. Turns out there may be another theory that holds a little more water than either of those.

Coming from Schmoes Know, their source claims that Fillion will not be appearing on screen in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY at all, but his voice will. The source has the actor portraying the voice of Cosmo, the telepathic dog and buddy to Rocket Raccoon. Unfamiliar with Cosmo? Here is their quick summary of the fan favorite character.

Cosmo is a telepathic Russian dog in the Marvel Comics universe. The character was created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, first appeared in Nova vol. 4 #7. Within the context of the stories, Cosmo is the security chief of the spacestation Knowhere and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

While Nathan Fillion could easily portray any number of Marvel characters (Doctor Strange, anyone?) or even play a young Han Solo, with his commitment to his series CASTLE, I would think this seems to be the most likely character for him to have jumped in to play. We have all assumed that his part would tease something bigger and Cosmo could easily be a bigger character in a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY sequel, but this seems to be just the perfect dose of Fillion in a movie that already has to sell audiences on a very foreign and outlandish new universe.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hits theaters August 1st.

"Cosmo is a telepathic Russian dog "

Awesome! I shall name my next telepathic puppy in his honour. But he probably already knows this.

something better than nothing

I also had expectations of a bigger role since James Gunn is directing and Joss Whedon is overseeing all of Marvel films but with his schedule and Castle I figure he can't devote the time that's necessary to do it justice. and to be honest I'm still surprised Joss Whedon hadn't used his whole stable I love actors to fill every role.

Ah. Well, that makes sense. I was wondering if the telepathically talking dog will ever make an appearance, especially since we know that Knowhere is in the movie.

makes more sense

I can't really say I know enough about Nova Prime to have an opinion on whether or not Fillion is right for that, but the "cameo as Mal Reynolds" thing lacked any sort of forethought on the fans' part while they were crossin their fingers for that. By all accounts, Guardians of the Galaxy takes place within the current Avengers timeline, meaning it's modern day. Firefly takes place about 500+ years in the future. How can Mal show up in a story taking place half a millennium before his birth?

And no, time travel is out because that's too much backstory for a quick cameo of a character who wouldn't actually be involved in the plot.

Plot twist: It's actually Castle wearing a Mal Reynolds costume.

This would actually be pretty cool. To see his character and Rocket Raccoon have an actual conversation. Just another reason to be excited for this movie.

And I know Fillion has put on some weight, but I agree with Ocelot_Snake in that Marvel or DC should give him a good enough reason to hit the gym. I posted before that if DC recasts Green Lantern, the guy would be perfect to take over.

So first we want Vin to get a big Marvel role, he gets to voice a tree that basically only says his name and now after all the demanding that Fillion get a big role, he's voicing a talking dog? How about casting the Rock to cameo as Howard the Duck while we're at it?

Dude, have you see Fillion lately? I love the guy, but he's put on like 40 pounds while living the easy life on Castle. He isn't in the shape to do a hero role ATM and from what he says I doubt he has the time to hit the gym for a bit part.

Chris Pratt wasn't exactly top shape either when they cast him as Star Lord.

I think it's actually pretty brilliant. they get them involved in smaller scale stuff like this just to give them a taste of the MCU while their schedules may be too tight to actually take on more committed roles, they have their fun and all, and then when their schedules become more open they can still take on bigger parts because they never actually appeared on screen, so there's no conflict in continuity.

If there's one thing I've learned its that the fans don't get what they want 99% of the time, so I wouldnt be surprised if this is as far as his Marvel involvement goes

It would be cool. It's been a fan speculation for a long time, so I'm gonna play the skeptic for now. Sometimes those wires get crossed. It would be awesome though
