WB not flinching from the Batman vs Superman/Captain America 3 release date

Apr. 8, 2014by:

A while back we brought you the news that Marvel's untitled movie being released on May 6, 2016 would be CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 and yesterday came confirmation of that. Of course that meant that Warner Bros would have to decide whether or not they would be flinching again and moving their release date in front of or after Marvel's sequel. Now we have a response from the studio.

Warner Bros president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman, made the following statement to Bloomberg news regarding Marvel's announcement.

It doesnt make a lot of sense for two huge superhero films to open on the same date but there is a lot of time between now and [May 6, 2016). However at this time, we are not considering a change of date for Batman vs. Superman."

That sounds like a challenge to me. It is hard to tell if Marvel is over-confident after CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER's outstanding opening weekend or if Warner Bros. is just not f*cking around anymore. The end result if both movies keep the same release date will be two-fold. On one hand, it will definitely determine which comic label fans are siding with once the opening weekend grosses are tallied, but it could also backfire and diminish potential profits for both since studios now rely so heavily on opening weekend box office performances.

I can say that we have not seen an opening weekend with movies of this magnitude going directly against each other, but I am excited to see that double feature. As of right now, BATMAN VS SUPERMAN and CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 are slated to open opposite each other on May 6, 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Notice WB is calling it BATMAN VS SUPERMAN? I hope they keep that as the title.

I don't think it really matters.

There's NO WAY one of these movies won't get pushed back because of delays. I don't know why studios feel the need to set release dates so early when we all know something's going to happen to change it. It WILL happen here. I guarantee it.

You're right, Dan.

Not only is it non-sensical, it's fucking moronic. Stake July 22 while it's still open, and be done with it.

This is stupid. They will be competing for the same dollars on the same opening weekend and someone is going to lose. Both will probably lose out. Now it is just a matter of pride and such. Bats Vs Supes going head to head with Cap 3, there is way too much invested in these films to split the opening weekend profits. They should express a logical reason not to push back the opening a week. What is so special about May 6th 2016? Also it is 2014, they have already started production on

No doubt the film will be done long before its release date. What is the big plan that makes May 6th 2016 the desired unveiling? None of that makes sense. I can see Cap 3 will take a while to get done. But Bats Vs Supes has been underway for a long time. This is a stupid pissing contest that is going to hurt both properties.

Shameless by Marvel

This is just a shameless attempt by Marvel to ensure that Batman vs Superman doesn't break any of The Avengers box office records. They are practically sacrificing one of their many franchises' opening weekend just to accomplish this.

How is it shameless by Marvel? DC is the one who chose to put their film against Captain America. Marvel had the release date first (long before DC), and Marvel is refusing to let DC bully them out of it.

yeah, but no one seems to acknowledge the fact that Marvel is so over-zealous with the first week of May. I mean, how many years have they dominated that weekend and how long have they had it booked in adavnce for? They're no more selfless than DC is.

WB has nothing to worry about

If anything Marvel should be be reconsidering. I have nothing against Captain America, they're doing a really good job with him. I haven't seen CA 2 yet but am dying to see it. Having to compete with the two biggest super heroes ever though-in the same movie-on the same weekend, is box office suicide.

That being said, if this stays and they both open that weekend, they are both going to make a ton of money, because everyone will see both, and I bet theaters will also play it up with

Good lord no, theaters will hate this, because for the price of one movie, they KNOW everyone will sneak into both. Would you pay a discounted double-feature price for two movies, or the price of one movie and still watch both? No damn contest. And that means the two films will be splitting each others' profits too. It'll be a lose-lose-lose situation.

Captain America all the way. At least Marvel embraced their boyscout. WB/DC was ashamed of theirs, and tried to bastardize him into a darker trendy emo character.

Also, Winter Soldier was a awesome film. Man of Steel kind of sucked.

Couldn't the Marvel fans criticizing the idea of Superman killing Zod, also be criticized for having Marvel pull that whole Mandarin twist??

OOOOO SNAP! A DC and Marvel showdown! One for the ages folks. I don't get why people are trying to claim who had the date first but this is awesome and I really don't care about how much each filthy rich studio makes. It will be fun going into the theater that night and seeing the Marvel and DC army's out to represent. I think its great and I can't wait to be there, representing The Batman of course.

I finally broke down and watched Man of Steel for the first time this past weekend, and even going in with lowered expectations I couldn't believe how big of a steaming pile of shit was served up. If the same thing happens with the sequel (which it will), Cap 3 is sure to walk away the big winner in this fight.

Marvel Staked Claim First

Marvel actually did have May 6, 2016 set as a release date for one of their films announced back in June of 2013, indicated during a Disney press release. It was only recently that they announced that this release date would be filled with Captain America 3. Here's the link: [link]

We look forward to announcing more details about these films as well as the sequel to THE AVENGERS (opening 5/1/15) at a later date."

WB did not change their release date to May 6 until January of 2014, 6 months after Disney claimed that weekend for a Marvel film: [link] So, Marvel did have a specific day set. Until now, they didn't announce what movie would be released on that weekend.

Remember people

Marvel has this date claimed back in June 2013. Before Batman vs Superman was even announced. They have already released 5 marvel movies the first week of May and still plan to do so in 2015 and 2017. Warner Brothers choice that date to intimidate Marvel.

WB should go back to releasing movies on the third weekend of July. Batman 2 and 3, Harry Potter 6 and 8, Pacific Rim, Inception. Thats a good date for WB. Im actually surprised Captain America didnt take the May release date this year and

Warner Brothers will back down. Although if they do go against each other, it will break the record for the highest grossing weekend in combined sales and Superman will out rank Captain America. I will be seeing both opening day

Last time WB rebooted Batman it opened with 48mil. That was with Nolan directing and fan favorite Christian Bale wearing the cape.
I think Batmnan VS Superman is on the loosing side of this battle. Yes MOS DID like 113mil opening weekend but it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

Plus we are forgetting that we have no idea what Cap 3 is about... What we do know is they added more exsisting hero's and introduced new ones in Winter Soldier, if they continue that who knows who might

No way BvS LOSES. 2 of the most iconic comic book heroes in their first live action film together equals mega hit. You MOS may have left a bad taste in your mouth, but not most. It's got a 76% rating of movie goers that liked on Rotten Tomatoes. Regular movie goers liked it more than critics but no way BvS tanks at all.

Yeah and that's pretty much exactly the same RT score that Superman Retrns got.

Is that considered a good movie in film buff circles?

The answer to that question is no.

Just because Ben Affleck got a lot of press doesn't mean it's automatic success, and do realize 99% of that was bad press. If bad press continues the movie could bomb. CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 has zero chance if bombing.

This will be coming off Avengers 2, we know Falcon wil be back, but what if they introduce another hero

Look how much Cap 1 opened with, then look what cap 2 opened with, I think it's SAFE to say Cap is going to do Iron Man 3 numbers.

It's a safe bet. Well... Not for DC.

Superman and Batman Together,, Trumps any Marvel film

The Only Reason Marvel is doing this, is so that DC won't break Marvels Avengers opening.

The Dark Knight and Avengers were so close and Superman wasn't even involved... There is no Question on which film I'm going to be seeing that day. However if i were DC id not say a single thing, then release it 1 week earlier to snatch that record from them.

@ Apricot, i feel like DC is getting a bad wrap post-Nolan, and people ware finding things wrong with Man of Steel for the sake of it. I thought it was a great take on it, certainly better then many Marvel films released. So yes ill see it opening weekend regardless of what the word of mouth is.

The Dark Knight Rises has the 4th highest opening ever (slightly higher than TDK's) with $160 Million, Avengers has the #1 opening weekend with over $200 Million and is over $30 higher than the #2 film, which is Iron Man 3. I don't know if they just don't do math the same way where you're from or what, but according to how we do math here, that's not that close.

@ Luke

I didn't mean TDK and TDKR i was referring to the franchise its self.. and if your all about the math, then crunch the numbers on what the avengers sales were with their 3D ticket prices, in regards to TDKR without 3D sales (apples to apples, ppl in seats or total number of tickets sold). Reports have stated that the Avengers would still come a head but the margin is close.. in the vicinity of 13 million.

Can ppl not just be rude? Why not just make a comment without the hostility,

After reading most of the comments below, I am just wondering if I'm the only person laughing at this whole story. It's April fucking 2014 people. The release date is May 2016.
Now when Fall 2015 arrives and the dates have not changed, then that's time to get all flustered and bitch about the studios.

Let's face it, WB will end up changing the date of the Batman/Superman movie because the script likely won't be ready by then, after they fire Goyer (and hopefully this happens soon) they'll need time to draft up a new one, then replace the actors who bowed out because of scheduling conflicts, we'll end up seeing this movie sometime in 2017 probably. But at this point if I had to choose one or the other, based on previous work, I'd go with Cap 3 opening weekend.

I think this is a bad idea for both companies. They are both out to make the most money and going up against each other on the same day. It is and will divide fan but I'm sure most people will go see both. And it could be a huge profit with everyone going to see both. Then companies won't care about what movies open on their day. It's a bold move for sure. I'm excited to see the out come. I know I'll be seeing two huge films that night.

It's an interesting pissing game

Marvel had that date set before Batman v. Superman moved from 2015 to 2016 so if one of them are going to move it should be BvS but I guess WB enjoys being a bully which is something they're in no position to do given they can only seem to get Batman right. Perhaps CA3 can move to April if push comes to shove, release whatever they have planned in July (Dr. Strange), and let WB live in their glory financially not critically:

I'm not sure why people are taking this personally

The companies aren't. This is a high-stakes, cut-throat business. This date matching is a pissing contest/playing chicken and Marvel thowing down the gauntlet, and calling out DC, and basically saying without saying that WB won't be able to get their movie together in time. I'm not saying it's going to be bad, but the inherent contrasting styles baked into a BvS premise has script rewrites, reshoots and delays written all over it.

WB will cave, they just need to come up with an excuse to save face. However if they do not, I expect Cap3 to be a mini Avengers with Falcon, Widow, Hawkeye, Vision and anyone else they can sneak in.

This is just a bad idea for both of them and it's kind of obvious. I seriously doubt that they'll both stick to that release date. It's like they're playing chicken with each other to see who moves first. I doubt Cap 3 can beat BvS even if it's a much better movie (which wouldn't surprise me after seeing Cap 2), but it would certainly take away a nice chunk of BvS' audience.

My thumbs down is for Marvel.

Batman vs Superman probably had the release date set well before Captain America 3 did, so Marvel Studio, well whatever they're called, is just being an asshole.

All three Iron Man movies, The Avengers, and Thor all released on the first weekend of May. Marvel claimed 2015 for Avengers 2 and stated that they will release a movie on that weekend in 2016 and 2017 back in June 2013, before BatmanSuperman was even announced. It was only recently that they announce the 2016 date was for Captain America 3, but everyone knew something was coming. Frankly i'm surprised they gave up the date this year for fellow Marvel character Spiderman.

Warner Brothers has a history of monopolizing the third weekend in July as their big summer movie. The Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Pacific Rim, Harry Potter 6 and 8. That is the date WB should keep with. WB is just trying to intimidate Marvel.

We look forward to announcing more details about these films as well as the sequel to THE AVENGERS (opening 5/1/15) at a later date."

WB did not change their release date to May 6 until January of 2014, 6 months after Disney claimed that weekend for a Marvel film: [link] . So, Marvel did have a specific day set. Until now, they didn't announce what movie would be released on that weekend.

My response was to jmt7121, but you did blame Marvel for taking the date even though they owned it first. I also wouldn't have responded if I had seen Nowheredan136's post.

Not gonna lie...

I will probably see both films on the same day.

However, if I had to choose - whilst I loved The Winter Soldier and continue to adore the MCU... Anything with Batman will always win for me.

The ONLY comic book film which could sway me on that would a full on Avengers outing. But not any if the solo outings.

Stupid move on Marvel's part.

By doing this, Marvel stands to lose money. Sure, they'll take the thunder out of DC a bit but that didn't need to happen anyways. Like Slimbo said, it's a pissing contest and Marvel whipped their dong out first for no reason.

Now if I can only afford to see one movie that weekend, I'm screwed on attending both premiers.

The worst part of the affair is this: summer 2016 is loaded with big superhero movies. X Men on may 27, then Spiderman 3 in June, and then another "Marvel untitled" film in july. So, if anyone changes date, the question is when are they going to release it! Maybe MARVEL is just doing this for fun, and then move Cap 3 to their other date in july, or maybe they expect WB to do that.

Superhero movies actually acount for a very tiny percentage of movies being released in a year. In the Summer, theres a new blockbuster WEEKLY, and they aren't all Superhero movies.

IMO action movies had trended this way because of the spectacle that CG offers. It would be hard to have an audience suspend their disbelief and put normal humans in these situations. It all started with the Matrix and the way that that move explained why regular humans could do extraordinary things.

Pure proof that studios don't give a fuck about audiences. This is nothing more than a pissing contest. Anyone of you family of 4's out there wanna spend $80 on movie tickets alone that weekend? I highly doubt it and most of you will have no choice but to pick one or the other so that choice can say they have the bigger wiener. Almost makes me wanna wait til theyre on Redbox and spend a buck on both.

woah 80 bucks?! for two movies? In all seriousness, you should look for a new theater, the one in my neighborhood in Chicago is only 6 bucks a ticket (including 3D)

You know what's so great about movies these days? They stay in the theatres for longer than a weekend, or you can just catch them on dvd/blu ray just a few months afterwards!

It's about 12 for an adult (12x2 adults = 24), and 8 for a kid (8x2 kids = 16). That's $40 a movie that parents have to dish out. Sure these people can wait, but you know how much kids are going to constantly bug their parents to go see these movies? Probably a lot. Probably to the point where the parent has no choice but to take their damn kids to the movies on opening weekend just to shut them up - which is exactly what the studios are wanting.

To answer the question you posed, maybe you could tell your family they only get to see one movie that weekend. That's what I would tell my kids. And if my kids whined and moaned about it, they wouldn't see either.

I like your style Apricot, however, youre playing into what the studios want. Someone wants to come out on top this weekend. Whichever movie your family chooses is a victory for that studio.

See the thing is, we live in a capitalist society. These companies aren't making these movies as a gift to us. We have to pay to see them. However, they have to make a product that people will want to see. If Disney and Warner Brothers are going to stick to these dates, hopefully it compels both of them to release their best effort possible in the spirit of competition.

Please consider changing your parenting style if/when you become a parent. This is why we have a whole generation of entitled youngsters... Their parents let them do whatever the hell they want. Cry and whine enough about wanting to see a movie this weekend? Well, shoot, if it will just shut you up, I guess I have no choice. Not going to stop having a hissy fit until you get the new Titanfall Xbox One package? Dammit, I have no choice... Studios can release their movies whenever they want. That

your position is actually what the studios want, not simply choosing which you prefer to see more and going to see it. holy fuck how can you make such a ridiculous claim.

Cap 2 was great and all but

This is BATMAN AND SUPERMAN after all. If any of Nolans solo Batmovies or Man of Steel opened head to head with Cap 1 or 2 Cap would have lost. But Batman and Superman? Sorry Marvel, you just brought a knife to a gun fight.

Marvel don't care

Marvel is doing this 100% on purpose. Don't think for a second that they actually believe that that DC movie (whatever it will be about or named) won't open #1 over their Captain America 3 movie. It will. Everyone knows this and Marvel knows this too. They aren't overconfident. This is a calculated strategic move on their part. Its Warner Brother's who will suffer the loss of audiences that are willing to see Captain America over their movie instead. The casual fan will see one or the

Batman vs Superman will win this out purely due to the names on the marquee. It's the team up movie that people have been waiting literally decades for, even non-comic book enthusiasts. However from a failed couple of 70's/90's TV movies, and whilst still holding on to ideals and characterizations that most average movie goers would have considered out of touch and "dull", wearing a costume that people not too long ago would have called awfully lame and cheesy.....the mere fact that Marvel have

Personally I have no interest in BvsS. I have no interest in watching a sequel to Man of Steel, especially one that threatens not only to continue to butcher Superman, but also Batman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor. It is a massive uphill struggle for that film for me from the second the credits rolled for MoS, and there's not been one piece of news I've heard for it yet (save Jeremy Irons, love that guy) that I have considered to be good, exciting, or even a step in the right direction.

I'd say the only good news that I considered a step in the right direction was when they scrapped David Goyer's draft and hired Oscar-winner Chris Terrio to rewrite the script. Other than that, nothing has given me much hope for this movie.

Even though at the moment I am more excited for Captain America 3, I think that will all change (for me at least) once we gets some photos, footage of Batman vs Superman. I'm more of a DC guy, and I think ultimately Batman vs Superman will end up being the better film and will win the Box Office that weekend. This is Batman AND Superman after all. Two of the most iconic comic book characters of all time in the same live film with one another for the very first time.

I plan on seeing both

Yep. I'm a HUGE Marvel fan and I LOVE what they are doing. I even left a huge review of how much I loved Winter Soldier and how it's possibly one of the best comic book films ever made.

But I have always been a DC fan at heart and firmly believe DC knows what they are doing and will finally deliver us the DC superhero films we deserve and have been waiting a long time for.

For me

This is a bad idea for DC. They basically have all their comic book eggs in one basket here. Even if they win the weekend Marvel's third best franchise after the Avengers and Iron Man will take a large enough chunk as to screw DC's future plans since it will look like it's under performing. Marvel was there first and DC should respect that. They have put up quality to this point.

I'll see both but I'll see CA3 first.

you guys are both sorta right and sorta wrong. Marvel had the date pegged tentatively for an unnammed Marvel Phase 3 movie. Once Batman/Supers pegged it FOR SURE, Marvel went with its best bet. Thor wont beat batman superman, antman wouldnt, theres no iron man 4, black panther nor dr strange would beat it, so they announced Cap 3. Only thing that would realistically beat Batman Supes is Avengers 2/3

Does it really matter?

Every comic book/movie fan on the planet will be seeing each of these movies. I'd imagine a ton of nerds will see both movies back to back. The only thing that will "matter" is the dick-measuring contest of who is #1 at the box office. Unless it ends up being a horriawful movie, I can't imagine Batman AND Superman opening below a 3rd Captain America movie.
