Weekend Box-Office: May 11-13, 2012

May. 13, 2012by:

The Avengers dominate the globe!

Clearly what the world needs right now is a little heroism, and a lot of fun. And the world is willing to pay for it!

In its second week, Marvel's grand gathering THE AVENGERS brought in another $103.7 million, Hulk-smashing the record for second-weekend total (previously held by AVATAR with $75.6M, followed closely by THE DARK KNIGHT with $75.1M).

That's a drop of around 50% from last weekend, which ordinarily would seem like an average fall for any movie (genre or otherwise), but when your movie broke the domestic record on its opening weekend there's certainly not much to complain about. The movie's 10-day North American total stands tall and triumphant with $373.1 million.

In addition, Joss Whedon's quippy Loki-fighters have already hammered past the colossal $1 BILLION mark in global ticket sales! That doesn't yet put THE AVENGERS in the Top 10 all-time worldwide moneymakers, but Steve, Tony, Bruce and the gang will surely knock their way up that chart like there's delicious shawarma waiting at the top.

It obviously wasn't the best time to be going up against the costumed champions, as Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's latest team-up DARK SHADOWS can attest. The only major new release of the weekend could only scare up $28.8 million in the shadow of Marvel's superteam.

That opening's below even Depp's vocal-throwing and performance-captured CG lizard RANGO, which started out with $38M, but still far above THE RUM DIARY ($5.1M) and THE TOURIST ($16.4M), and even better than PUBLIC ENEMIES ($25.2M). DARK SHADOWS did amass an additional $36.7M from overseas crowds, but it's still a relatively bleak debut considering the reported $150M budget and Depp's A-list status.

But don't feel too bad for Johnny -- he's got three movies on that aforementioned all-time box office list (two PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEANs and ALICE IN WONDERLAND). Although expect that last one to slip away as THE AVENGERS blast their way up the list in the coming weeks.

There wasn't much excitement on the rest of the chart, with the remainders battling for whatever leftover dollars they could grab. THINK LIKE A MAN is still holding its own, and THE HUNGER GAMES continues its crawl toward the anticipated $400M domestic mark (it's at $623M worldwide).

THE RAVEN, SAFE and THE THREE STOOGES made their exit from the list this week as Fox Searchlight took advantage of the counterprogramming opportunity to expand the elders-in-India comedy THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL on 150 more screens, giving it the second-highest per-screen average in the Top 10. Lionsgate also brought out their own limited-release alternative, the Eva Mendes drama GIRL IN PROGRESS, which squeaked into the tenth slot.

Next weekend brings a few new choices such as Sacha Baron Cohen's latest THE DICTATOR (on Wednesday), the expensive alien-invasion game-adaptation BATTLESHIP, and the maternal comedy WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING. And there's always just seeing THE AVENGERS again. What did you think about DARK SHADOWS? VOTE HERE!

i'm guessing Avengers will bring another $55m next weekend with Dictator trailing behind with $35m and Battleship losing this fight with just $30m, What to Expect... will probably be around there somewhere as well with just below $30m. Wow, think about it, that'll be quite a massive weekend money wise if they do these numbers

I've only seen The Avengers twice. I'm sorry for not doing my part. I will go see it again this weekend to make sure Battleshit doesn't make #1. Oh, and Fuck Tim Burton/Depp. Give us BeetleJuice or GTFO!

Battleship opened in South Africa about two weeks back and I went to see it after work one night.

I mean I gave them money and everything.

OH GOD! I'M SO SORRY!

*bursts into tears*

Battleship will be number 1 next weekend. Not rooting for the movie, just stating the facts. Avengers will make any where between 35-44M next weekend, while Battleship will likely pull in at least 50M (probably more). Sorry folks, but it's going to happen.

I'm gonna go see the Avengers again this weekend just to do my part in making sure it stays in the number 1 spot.

Fantastic news for The Avengers! It deserves every single cent (and then some). $100M is pretty stunning, though not surprising given the movie's top notch quality. Dark Shadows seems like the same, tired crap Tim Burton continues to put out year after year. I wish he'd return to form and make something the way he used to--in the vein of Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice. Big Fish was the last really good one.

I don't think Avengers has quite got upto it's 88miles per hour. I think we are going to see it make a shitload more before it ends it's run. As for Dark Shadows yeah it looks great and it's got good ol Johnny Depp in it but me thinks hes in too many things these days. And finally Battleship I've said it before and I'll say it again it IS a lot of fun
( cheesy fun) and yes it is a bit like Transformers but I didn't see Mr Bays name in the credits so that has to count for something. It does

I see what you did there, now all you need is a Flux Capacitor to make it all happen accordingly.

I hope it wipes the floor with BATTLESHIP

TARATINODORK... spot on comment, brother..had me laughing.

I hope Battleship flops because it is Hollywood scum at its best. Thinking it can recycle something with a different title on it.

I do have a feeling Battleship will flop here, it looks too much like Transformers at sea. I have no desire to see it. Like others have mentioned, go see The Avengers again & again.

WOW 100 million in the 2nd weekend, thats simply amazing but could not be more happy for The Avengers. Kinda expected Dark Shadows to perform slightly better. Wonder how battleship will do next weekend, I somehow feel its gonna be the same results & The Avengers will finish on top until MIB3. Just don't see it losing any steam anytime soon.

So even if Avengers has another 50-60% drop off in attendance, that's still more than enough to beat any of the tired dogs coming out next week.

Good movie but now that I've seen it, I have no desire to do so again. Not even in the top 10 of comic book movies.

LMAO.. That must be a list from the future that you got in your time machine because I can't possibly think of 10 comic book movies that would come close to being better than THE AVENGERS.. You must have terrible taste in movies

Not in my top 10 either. It's a fun film for sure, but that's pretty much it. Some people lack objectivity. It barely got any real character development. While the action and comedy are well-done, the drama and mystery are badly-handled and the first half is kind of boring.

Better comic book movies (random order): Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begin, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, X2, X-Men - First Class, Blade II, Hellboy II, Iron Man, Sin City, Superman : The Movie, Superman II, Watchmen

Hunger Games 400M?

I did enjoy the adaptation of "The Hunger Games" immensely. Even though it has already made so, so, so, much money I am pulling for 400M. On a sidenote...I have seen "The Avengers" 3x now and man it really was done right. As for "Battleship". I don't think it will take #1 but if it does I don't think "The Avengers" will be crying. I will be shocked if "Battleship" takes 100M. I do like Kitsch but the movie is not appealing to me and I have yet to hear another carbon-based life form say that
