Trailer for Dark Comedy Calvary Starring Brendan Gleeson

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

A new trailer for writer/director John McDonagh’s (THE GUARD) drama CALVARY has landed and it’s definitely worth checking out. McDonagh again walks a fine line between comedy and drama, utilizing the great Brendan Gleeson once more to achieve what looks like another winner.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Calvary’s Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kely Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral—and often comic—problems, he feels sinister forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

This trailer highlights the darkly comic tone and does a great job balancing it with a lot of humor. Brendan Gleeson could be an extra and still manage to steal this movie; he is truly one of our finest actors. He’s joined by a lot of familiar faces, notably Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, BRIDESMAIDS) and Aidan Gillen (The Wire, Game of Thrones).

With so many faith-based features making money in theaters these days, I wonder if something that examines religious faith will be as marketable. Our own Chris Bumbray reviewed the movie earlier this year calling it "exceptional". I’m definitely looking forward to checking this one out when it hits theaters.

The film also stars Kelly Reilly, Dylan Moran, Isaach De Bankole, M. Walsh, Marie-Josee Croze, Domhnall Gleeson, and David Wilmot.

CALVARY opens on August 1st 2014.
