Trailer for drama What Maisie Knew, starring Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgard, and Steve Coogan

Based on the 1897 novel by author Henry James, WHAT MAISIE KNEW is a contemporary update of the famed novel, starring Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgard, Joanna Venderham and newcomer Onata Aprile as the titular character.  The book is a much-revered classic that tackles the still relevant themes of divorce and the effect it has on children, who in this case, is young Maisie.  The film is directed by the duo of Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who also helmed THE DEEP END, BEE SEASON, and UNCERTAINTY.

It’s an interesting twist, taking a famed novel and updating it for the 21st Century, and somewhat telling that the themes would still be so relevant today.  It’s a simple plot, but a convoluted affair, as most divorces are, and looks to be an emotional journey for all involved, particularly Maisie, with whom the story revolves around.

Take a look:

This may not be a “rush to the theaters” watch for many, but I think anyone who can relate to the topic of divorce and the fallot that follows it will likely be able to relate to it in many ways.  I’m glad that people are still tackling films of this type and genre and it looks to me like something rich and emotional, which is not in abundance at the local theaters regularly.

WHAT MAISIE KNEW is slated for release in Denmark on September 5, 2013, but does not have a U.S. release set.
