Russell Sanzgiri's Counterpart Pictures has acquired the film rights to BLINK, a digital comic book that was written by former DC Comics editor Rex Ogle. BLINK was published through Tapas Media, a company that offers "bite-sized stories" to read "on the go".
Sanzgiri will executive produce the film adaptation of Ogle's story about
a young African-American girl pushed to the brink — until she screams at the top of her lungs, seemingly causing anything and everything to freeze indefinitely. Alone and afraid, she wanders around New York City while being stalked by an ancient evil entity.
While the comic features the girl being chased and attacked by tentacled creatures that bring to mind Lovecraftian horrors, the story also delves into subject matter like domestic abuse, anxiety, and depression. When the girl's scream stops time, we're meant to wonder if this has really happened or if she has gone insane.
Ogle has described the ancient evil in the story as a
personification of self-doubt and self-hate, the solidification of fear and evil—all the things that haunt every person who is both gifted and cursed with existence."
He told Forbes that he was partially inspired to write BLINK by
movies that are able to tell two stories simultaneously, like the original SUSPIRIA, which is both a supernatural horror film and a conversation about power and innocence. So I wanted BLINK to work as both a bizarre science-fiction narrative, but also as a piece about mental health."
BLINK sounds like an interesting story, and I look forward to seeing how the movie version will turn out.
