I gotta say, I am really excited for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. With each new image and plot detail I am more and more stoked to finally see a superhero movie from Marvel that goes against the grain. Between this, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, 2014 is shaping up to be the most unique year for Marvel in a long time. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER looks to be the most distinct from the pack with the fact that it is aiming to be a 70s style conspiracy thriller.

The LA Times shared this new image of Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie in character as Captain America and Falcon which showcases their gear. Mackie’s outfit is sporting his character’s wings folded into what looks like a giant backpack/turtle shell. Aside from that, his costume looks very similar to the S.H.I.E.L.D. vest worn by Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS.

Evans also shared some new background regarding how Steve Rogers and Mackie’s character will interact in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Meeting [Anthony] Mackie’s character, he used to serve, now he works at the VA counseling guys who come home with PTSD — they connect on that level. I think they’re both wounded warriors who don’t bleed on other people. Cap has no one to bleed on. I think Mackie knows how to handle people like that. … Sometimes when things are bad, trusting a stranger is the way to go.”

I like the idea of Rogers finding a kindred spirit, much in the way he felt connected to Bucky (Sebastian Stan). The competing emotions of dealing with his new friend as well as the return of his old one as the villainous Winter Soldier should make for some very intense drama.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER hits theaters on Aptil 4, 2014.
