Child’s Play 3 (1991) – WTF Happened to This Horror Movie?

Sometimes when a horror franchise is really on a roll, we’ll get sequels that are just one year apart from each other. But the waiting period between Child’s Play 2 and the movie we’re looking at in the new episode of the WTF Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, Child’s Play 3 (watch it HERE) was even shorter than a year. The third Child’s Play movie reached theatres just nine months after the second one! With such a quick development and production, is it any surprise that Child’s Play 3 turned out to be one of the least popular entries in the Chucky franchise? Directed by Jack Bender from a screenplay by Don Mancini, Child’s Play 3 has the following synopsis: It’s been years since Chucky, the doll with the soul and the voice of a psychopathic killer, was apparently destroyed in a fire at a doll factory. Now Chucky’s manufacturer is remaking the same line of toys with the old, still haunted materials. This resurrects Chucky, who goes after Andy, his former owner, who now attends military school. Chucky slashes his way through a string of grotesque murders as Andy tries to stop the homicidal doll and the spirit within it.

The film stars Justin Whalin, Perrey Reeves, Jeremy Sylvers, Travis Fine, Dean Jacobson, Peter Haskell, Dakin Matthews, Andrew Robinson, Burke Byrnes, Matthew Walker, Donna Eskra, Terry Wills, Richard Marion, Laura Owens, Ron Fassler, Michael Chieffo, and Henry G. Sanders, with Brad Dourif providing the voice of Chucky.

Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters.
