There are some projects that just make me shake my head. I wasn’t sure how to write up this story and in the end figured, f*ck it, this is too random to not report. It appears that Sony and producer Scott Rudin are moving forward with a big screen adaptation of the sitcom GOOD TIMES.
I know some of you may think this sounds dyn-o-mite (sorry), but I am left wondering how you would adapt the series for the big screen. I mean, it wasn’t exactly a narrative driven series. If they adapt it, they could go the route of THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE and send the characters on a zany adventure, but that seems a weird way to adapt GOOD TIMES. The CBS series ran from 1974-1979 and focused on working-class couple James and Florida Evans as they raised three kids while struggling with hard financial times, unemployment and keeping their kids away from temptations that came with living in a Chicago housing project. The movie will be set in the 1960s, which gives Johnston a rich and politically charged period to mine.
The GOOD TIMES movie will be written by Phil Johnston who recently wrote WRECK-IT RALPH and CEDAR RAPIDS. GOOD TIMES was a spin-off of MAUDE which was a spin-off of ALL IN THE FAMILY. The popularity of the characters has lasted through the decades, but it has since become the Nick at Nite staple that stoners and bored college kids stumble across at 3 in the morning. I am not sure if this is a good idea at all.
