Four weeks ago, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max and now simply known as Max unveiled a teaser trailer for the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which serves as a prequel to the 1984 classic Gremlins (watch it HERE). That show is set to premiere on Tuesday, May 23rd – and with its premiere date less than two weeks away, a full trailer for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has now arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will take viewers back to 1920s Shanghai where the Wing family first meets the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 Gremlins film) accepts the dangerous task to take Gizmo home and embarks on a journey through the Chinese countryside. Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, and together, they encounter—and sometimes battle—colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

The voice cast consists of Ming-Na Wen, James Hong, BD Wong, Matthew Rhys, Izaac Wang, AJ LoCascio, and Gabrielle Nevaeh Green. Guest stars will include Sandra Oh, Randall Park, George Takei, Bowen Yang, and Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Tze Chun wrote Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and serves as the showrunner. In addition to Chun, the show is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Brendan Hay, Sam Register (President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios) and Amblin Television Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Dan Krall is supervising producer. Amblin Television is producing the series in association with Warner Bros. Animation. Gremlins and Gremlins 2 director Joe Dante is a consulting producer on the series.

While I’m holding on to hope that we’ll get to see a new live-action Gremlins movie sooner than later, I’ll watch this show in the meantime because it’s the first Gremlins project we’ve gotten in over thirty years.
