Weedjies! Halloweed Night (Movie Review)

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

PLOT: When a midnight scavenger hunt for a rare bud of weed known as the "Golden Nug" brings a group of party-hungry stoners to a haunted hotel, it seems like it’ll be the greatest night ever. But when the mysterious Baroness introduces them to the Weed-G-Board, they play a game that opens a portal beyond our world, and unleash The Weedjies! This group of ghastly hysterical creatures has only one mission: Party ‘till you die. Before Halloween night is over, the unwitting guests will have to fight for their right to party, and put The Weedjies back in the board before midnight – or end up sucked into the netherworld forever!

REVIEW: Described as "a wacky, weed-choked nod to the Empire Pictures classic GHOULIES" Full Moon and director Danny Draven's rowdy monster comedy WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT is the first feature film to be released from the highly anticipated DEADLY TEN anthology. For those who might not know, Full Moon's DEADLY TEN anthology allows fans to follow the production of ten films via live production and post-production video updates. So after tracking the making of the film, what did we think of the final product? Let's find out!

WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT is produced by Charles Band who is best known around these parts for being the low-budget mastermind behind such films as the PUPPET MASTER series and more recently the EVIL BONG series. Written by Shane Bitterling WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT, fittingly kicks off on Halloween 1978 (get it?) where a hippie dude is seemingly all alone in his house and gets attacked by some unseen little creatures. He grabs one up with a bedsheet and forces it (stick with me here) back into a glowing-green Ouija board. Once he's done so, a witch-woman appears out of nowhere laughing at him. He tells her he is safe as he just killed "the last one." She continues to laugh and informs the poor unwashed sumbitch that that was not, in fact, the last one. And before you can say Gremlins on Ganja, the guy is sucked into the Ouija board JUMANJI style.

Cue opening credits.

From there we are introduced to three college girls who are in possession of a killer and completely abandoned hotel. How the hell did they pull that off? One of the girls knows a guy. Whatever works for me. Anyhow, it turns out they are planning the world's best Halloween party. And I have to say with such a killer location these ladies are off to a good start. But something tells me some evil weed creatures are going to ruin their good times. Then a nerdy guy shows up with a special strain of bud that promises to knock everyone on their asses. Cut to a quick montage and the three girls and the nerdy guy have completely set up the whole place for a bitchin' Halloween party. Good work, guys. Now that's some hustle.

The film features a motley cast consisting of The Howard Stern Show's Richard Christy and Medicated Pete, comedian Ester Goldberg, Instagram model Misty Mason, EVIL BONG franchise veteran Mindy Robinson, Playboy superstar Bridget Marquardt and internet film critic Shawn "Cool Duder" Phillips. But is the cast really even the draw here? I don't think so. That said, the whole gang seems more than up to giving this silly film their all and everyone on hand seems to be having a ball. And there's a respectable charm to that so all's fair in Full Moon and Halloween weed horror-comedies. The baked beasts "The Weedjies," were created by FX wizard Tom Devlin and I have to say as a fan of GREMLINS and GHOULIES, these creatures – while obviously low-budget – are charming and a lot of fun to watch. In fact, the low-budget crudeness of there designs and operations only makes matters all the more charming.

In the end, is a movie called WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT, brought to us by Full Moon, a motion picture that really even needs a review? I don't think so. If you know Full Moon and willingly sign up to view a film called WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT, I'm pretty sure you are already more than aware of what lies in store for you and your buddies. And at the very least I can report here today that WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT delivers on whatever promise you were hoping for. As you may have noticed by this point in the review, the word I've used the most is "charming". And at the end of the day, that's just what WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT is – a charming low-budget offering by our buddies over at Full Moon. I doubt it has the charm and the staying power to bring many new fans to the Full Moon fold, but us fans that are already out there searching for our next fix, WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT works like a … wait for it… charm.

Once again for the cheap seats, Full Moon and director Danny Draven's rowdy monster comedy WEEDJIES! HALLOWEED NIGHT is the first film to be released from the highly anticipated DEADLY TEN anthology. And while we're all still here, Full Moon is prepping the next DEADLY TEN feature for release, NECROPOLIS: LEGION by director Chris Alexander (QUEEN OF BLOOD). A dark-as-pitch paean to possession film, NECROPOLIS: LEGION stars Lynn Lowry (David Cronenberg's SHIVERS, George Romero's THE CRAZIES) and features a score by legendary composer Richard Band (RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND).  NECROPOLIS: LEGION will premiere on Full Moon Features and Full Moon's Amazon channel on November 18th.
