James Gunn teases a “basic plan” for a Guardians/Avengers team-up

We all knew it was coming eventually despite deflections from Kevin Feige and everyone else at Marvel, but now it looks like the roadmap for the Marvel Cinematic Universe will inevitably include a crossover between THE AVENGERS and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. When remains a question, but according to comments from director James Gunn, it is in the planning stages.

Speaking with Yahoo Movies, Gunn was directly asked about plans to possibly unite the two franchises.

“We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is. That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.”

With GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY well on track for a big opening, possibly one of the biggest August openings of all time, and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 already announced for 2017, this seems like a likely scenario for a future film. With Thanos playing a big role in Gunn’s film and a tease of his involvement at the end of THE AVENGERS, I would expect things to come to a head by THE AVENGERS 3 in 2018 or later.

But also pay attention to Gunn’s comment that some characters may overlap. This means, like in the comic book, Iron Man or Hulk could meet up with the Guardians or possibly Star-Lord along could end up on Earth with the rest of The Avengers. The possibilities are endless, but I would have no doubt plans are already in development.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hits theaters tomorrow.
