Mark Ruffalo on Hulk’s solo film: “It doesn’t look particularly promising”

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It took a few attempts before audiences received a Bruce Banner/Hulk that most everyone was pleased with, but unfortunately it seems that we still have a bit of a wait ahead of us before we get a standalone Hulk film starring Mark Ruffalo. While Marvel is free to use the Hulk as they see fit in group films like THE AVENGERS or have the big guy make appearances in THOR: RAGNAROK, Universal still has control over any potential standalone Hulk film. The actor spoke with Yahoo Movies recently where he was asked if Marvel and Universal would be able to reach an agreement with the character similar to the one Marvel reached with Sony over the use of Spider-Man.

I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.

It's disappointing that Universal and Marvel can't seem to reach an agreement, but it's nice to know that the two studios are at least talking about it. Mark Ruffalo has hope that he'll get his time to shine in a standalone Hulk film, but in the meantime, it's not like we won't be seeing the giant green rage monster pop up in more Marvel films. Ruffalo will be joining Chris Hemsworth in the upcoming THOR: RAGNAROK which will team up Thor and Bruce Banner for what Ruffalo calls "a buddy picture." Mark Ruffalo claims that THOR: RAGNAROK will start shooting in June of 2016 for a November 3, 2017 release, but that there's a lot of work to be done yet as the script is still being written.

Do you really want a standalone HULK film, or are you fine with the big guy being a supporting character?
