Cowboy Bebop live-action series blasting off to Netflix

The cult anime favorite COWBOY BEBOP is not invisible to the clutches of the live-action adaptation, and now the series remake from THOR: THE DARK WORLD scribe Chris Yost is heading to the ultimate content frontier – Netflix. The streaming giant announced yesterday with the help of a short tease that the series was heading to the service with a 10-episode run, meaning fans will have plenty of material to critique and compare alongside the classic original series.

The story of the original anime series centers around a rag-tag group of bounty hunters – Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine. Edward Wong and Ein – living in the year 2071, as humanity has been forced to live among the other planets in the solar system after the Earth becomes uninhabitable. They get into all sorts of mishaps with other criminals as the crime rate rises, dealing with issues stemming from their haunted pasts, doing anything to make a life for themselves in this new world – as well as a little extra change on the side. The show ran for 26 episodes between 1998-1999 in Japan, and the show has achieved massive cult status as one of the greatest anime series ever, with many attributing it to popularizing the medium in the West.

A co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements executive producing, Midnight Radio is also on the project with Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg executive producing, as well as the studio behind the original series, Sunrise, in the mix with Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki executive producing. The cherry on top is the director of the original series, Shinichiro Watanabe, returning as a consultant.

I have never seen COWBOY BEBOP, so perhaps this is a good time to get invested in the original series. Maybe with the acquisition of the show, the anime will also be available on Netflix soon, which would introduce the series to a whole new bevy of viewers. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the series, but knowing them they could reveal that tomorrow and have the show debut on Friday. For that info, be sure to stay tuned!
