Director D.J. Caruso gives an update on the Preacher adaptation

While I’m genuinely excited for most comic adaptations coming to the big screen, the one that definitely has held my top spot for some time is PREACHER. However, the damn thing can’t get a good push. I completely understand. The material is a little out there not to mention at times f*cked up but is this an abnormal thing? The studio puts up the money because they think it’s something they can sell a project though this is probably one they are having a harder time with.

This is why I keep jumping back to the HBO idea. Cable television gives you a little more leeway to express yourself creatively. They also tend to take on the jobs that people don’t want to wager on. So until someone figures out how they can market the material (especially the ending), we will continue to get updates like this one from director D.J. Caruso:

“I’m still attached to Preacher and we’re wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film we’re trying to get going this summer. So Preacher got put on the back burner, but we’re still involved with Preacher and hopefully we’ll have some good news on that soon. Todd August wrote a great script. I think it’s one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if it’s going to be made for a certain price. So we’re kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way. “

Still not sold on Caruso as the right fit for this. He did make the underrated THE SALTON SEA with Val Kilmer but PREACHER is a whole different ballgame. Plus after hearing Edgar Wright talk about the changes they wanted to make with SCOTT PILGRIM, I’m wondering if Caruso has that same integrity. If you do this, you have to be as faithful as possible or don’t do it at all.
