Ricky Gervais will host The 77th Golden Globes for the “very last time”

Comedian Ricky Gervais has been lured back to his old stomping grounds, The Golden Globes, for what he's calling the "very last time". The 77th Golden Globes, which take place on January 5th, will be Gervais' fifth time hosting the gig with the likes of Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg & Sandra Oh having taken the reigns before the show went host-less.

“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening,” said Gervais about returning. It's interesting and, at this point, maybe even a little daring that the Globes would opt for a host when everyone else seems to be opting out as everyone they approach for their prestigious ceremonies seems to have a Twitter past for, y'know, making jokes – even bad ones. The CEO of dcp Mike Mahan weighed in on that, saying, “In a world where many award shows are opting to go the no host route, the Golden Globes are going all in! It’s going to be a great night.”

Gervais has been his usual comedic self for his time onstage with the Globes, pulling no punches and keeping everyone on their toes. He's definitely not a "safe" choice, which is a good thing. With the vocal minority crying for everyone to be protected against any kind of offensive joke making awards shows (ahem, Oscars) cave to the pressure, it's nice to see a show take a risk again. Although, back when Gervais hosted from 2010 – 2012 it wasn't considered a "risk" but times have changed and here we are, sadly. As someone who doesn't take any of these award shows seriously, I'm actually more inclined to watch with Gervais coming back to the stage and I hope he continues to pull no punches and equally offend and entertain everyone.

The 77th Golden Globes airs at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, January 5th. Gervais can be seen currently on his Netflix show After Life.
