Taika Waititi says future Marvel films may include a more talkative Hulk

So far the Hulk of Marvel's Cinematic Universe hasn't been nearly as loquacious as his comic-book counterpart, but according to THOR: RAGNAROK director Taika Waititi, that may be about to change. HitFix recently caught up with Taika Waititi at the Sundance Film Festival and the director chatted about what he has planned for THOR: RAGNAROK, which apparently includes discussions on how far to push Hulk's ability to converse.

It's interesting, because at the moment, there's a big conversation that's happening about how far to push that. Whether or not The Hulk should be [verbal/conscious]. I think a lot of those conversations have more to do with what's going to come up in future movies, so I think a lot of those decisions are larger group decisions, rather than anything to do with just me or the writer. They have a lot of stuff that they have to consider. But I do think that's the best way to track it. I think we all want that. I think we all want to see that development and the evolution of that character. I also think you can do it in a fun way.

Hulk has burst out a few choice one-liners in previous Marvel films, but as the big green guy will have more of a presence in the future of the MCU, including a standalone arc which will be spread throughout several movies, maybe now is the time to make him a little more vocal. Even though THOR: RAGNAROK will be dealing with some apocalyptic subject matter, part of the reason that Marvel hired Taika Waititi was to inject a much needed dose of laughs to the film, but Waititi assured Marvel fans that he won't be taking things over the top.

It's not going to be a crazy comedy, like over the top, but that’s definitely my strength and that's what they were looking for when they approached me. So, I think that is the thing I can bring to it to give it a different spin and freshen it up a bit.

THOR: RAGNAROK is set for a November 3, 2017 release.
