The King’s Man trailer teases the epic and stylish origin of the Kingsman

Matthew Vaughn's KINGSMAN movies (adapted from Mark Millar's comics) introduced audiences to a new kind of spy movie, but one rooted in the old school themes of what it means to be a true gentleman. The organization in the movie, the Kingsman, has a rich history that goes all the way back to WWI, and now the first trailer is here for THE KING'S MAN, the prequel that will explore the origins of the classy and deadly group of spies, with Ralph Fiennes teaching a new recruit what it means to be chivalrous in dark times.

The original movies from Vaughn are slick, fast-paced and have a cheeky sense of humor, but this one looks like it takes things in a slightly different direction. Though not without some stylistic flourishes this looks more like Vaughn's spin on the period war flick, with some heavy wartime imagery and a surprisingly dramatic, yet energetic tone. Fiennes seems to be taking on the mentor role as he recruits a young soldier (Harris Dickinson), much like Colin Firth did for Taron Egerton in the first KINGSMAN movie.

Between the period-setting thrills and Fiennes speaking about chivalry, I can't imagine anyone not wanting to see this movie. It's got some old-school thrills and a terrific cast, and it looks different enough to set it apart from the previous movies. Even I, knowing full well what this movie is, was thrown for a bit of a loop when the Kingsman shop came into frame. As I said, despite stylish camera movements and effects, this looks like its own distinct thing, almost like a serious spy thriller set in this mad-dash world Vaughn brought to life only a few years ago.

One again directed by Vaughn this entry was written by Karl Gajdusek (STRANGER THINGS), and along with Fiennes and Dickinson, the movie sports an all-star cast, including, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, Rhys Ifans, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Hollander, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance, Stanley Tucci and Liam Neeson. THE KING'S MAN is in theaters February 14, 2020.
