New The Lego Ninjago Movie trailer goes deeper into the father & son story

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

So a third star-studded LEGO movie – THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE – is on its way, after the smash successes of THE LEGO MOVIE and THE BATMAN LEGO MOVIE. This one stars Dave Franco as the young, unwitting son (L-loyd) of the world's archvillain Garmadon (played by Justin Theroux), which gets him ostracised by his peers. However, he is also a secret ninja warrior for good, led by Sensei Wu (Jackie Chan), alongside his high school friends voiced by the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Abbi Jacobson, Zach Woods, and Michael Pena who also pilot mechs? Okay.

Anyway, here's a new, longer trailer that reveals more of the plot (especially the father/son dynamic):

Not going to lie, still not loving what I'm seeing so far. But it's not terrible, and I wasn't wowed by THE LEGO MOVIE trailers either (which is a movie I ended up loving), so I'm still willing to give it a chance. And besides the all-star cast, the other selling point is the potentially interesting take it's going with the whole "evil father" plotlines in a lot of fantasy films, and possibly being a bit more clever and self-aware with it. I especially thought the flashback to L-loyd's mom dating an obvious four-armed demon guy was good for a couple chuckles. Let's see if it's actually clever though, and not just smug lampshading.

I guess we'll find out when THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE kicks into theaters September 22nd.
