Paddington 3 production will begin by end of the year, Ben Whishaw confirms

Paddington was an absolute delight and against all odds, Paddington 2 was somehow even more charming. StudioCanal confirmed last year that a third installment of the franchise was officially in the works. “We can confirm Studiocanal is working very hard on film 3 with the utmost craft and care — as with film 1 and 2,” said StudioCanal representatives. While speaking with the BBC recently, Ben Whishaw confirmed that Paddington 3 is still happening and that production is expected to start by the end of the year. Break out the marmalade!

The character of Paddington is beloved by children as well as adults, but Ben Whishaw said that explaining to children that he’s the voice of the bear is rather hard.

It’s very disappointing. Occasionally a parent will point out me to a child and I can see the bafflement on their faces, because how can I possibly be Paddington? It doesn’t make any sense to them. And to try to explain that I’m the voice of Paddington is even more confusing for their minds. Bless them.

Although Paddington 3 is moving forward, it will be doing so without director Paul King. In 2020, King said that although the two Paddington movies had been “one of the great treats of my life, at some point you just have to stop. It might be a time for somebody else to do a twist on it. I’m trying not to do a third bear movie, which is a huge, huge mistake.” King will remain involved as an executive producer but we don’t know who will be replacing him as the director of Paddington 3. Whoever steps in will certainly have some big boots to fill, but I’m ready for more Paddington in my life.

Are you excited that production on Paddington 3 is finally going to get started?
