Patty Jenkins says COVID-19 has put developing Wonder Woman 3 on pause

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Patty Jenkins has spoken in the past about her plans for Wonder Woman's arc that began in WONDER WOMAN and continues in WONDER WOMAN 1984. Jenkins has said her arc develops even further in a planned Amazonians spin-off film and WONDER WOMAN 3. That being said, despite those initial plans, the COVID-19 has Jenkins rethinking everything and now development is on pause at the moment.

Jenkins spoke with "Total Film Magazine" and she revealed that the current events going on with the pandemic is making her reevaluate where Wonder Woman's story should go moving forward:

"I've really hit the pause button. Because the truth is, where that plotline was coming from was our state of being six months ago. And so I want to make sure I'm totally absorbing whatever the result of this pandemic is."

Jenkins goes on to say that even when the lockdown is fully over and everyone is ready to go back to work, future WONDER WOMAN related projects won't get started right away:

"We're not starting to work on that movie right away. I'm hoping to do this Amazon movie before we do the third Wonder Woman. And I may not do either of them. You never know what will happen in this world, you know? But yes, I think the plotline will stay very similar, probably. But I want to make sure it's influenced by all of this."

Patty Jenkins has already had to deal with the pandemic in terms of waiting for WONDER WOMAN 1984 to get released. The sequel was set to open in June but it was pushed to August 14 as movie theaters nationwide began to shutter in the wake of COVID-19. That release date seemed like a safe bet until it became clear movie theaters would not be opening in time to secure a strong run so Warner Bros. shifted the film again to October 2. Starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal, WONDER WOMAN 1984 should be safe on the October date but with how unpredictable 2020 has been, you just never know.
