Remaking The Host

JoBloJoBlo

Korean films are great. I’m sure they’re not all great, you understand, but the ones that end up making it worldwide always have a certain… greatness about them. OLDBOY is one of my all-time favourites, partly because the direction and plot are amazing and partly because it’s a little bizarre. Which is exactly what makes THE HOST, for lack of a better word; great.

For those of you not fortunate enough to have seen THE HOST or know anything about it, the film centres around a huge mutant monster that appears from the Han river and procedes to wreak havoc in Seoul. In the midst of all the chaos, a young girl is carried away by the monster and her dysfunctional family set off to go and retrieve her themselves.

Anyway, in a chapter straight from the book of things that are unsurprising, director Boong Joon-ho has revealed that Universal Studios have purchased the rights to produce an American remake of the darkly funny monster movie. THE HOST opened on a record number of South Korean screens and went on to become the highest grossing South Korean film of all time.
