Ringu, a.k.a. Ring (1998) – Best Foreign Horror Movies

Our video series Best Foreign Horror Movies started off with two episodes that focused on Italian productions: Dario Argento’s Deep Red and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. With the third episode, we’re shifting to a different country – Japan, to be exact. In the newly released episode embedded above, we take a look at director Hideo Nakata’s 1998 film Ringu, a.k.a. Ring, which kicked off a franchise that includes sequels, prequels, remakes, and even a crossover with the Ju-on/Grudge franchise.

Written by Hiroshi Takahashi and based on a novel by Koji Suzuki, Ringu has the following synopsis:

When her niece is found dead along with three friends after viewing a supposedly cursed videotape, reporter Reiko Asakawa sets out to investigate. Along with her ex-husband, Ryuji, Reiko finds the tape, watches it — and promptly receives a phone call informing her that she’ll die in a week. Determined to get to the bottom of the curse, Reiko and Ryuji discover the video’s origin and attempt to solve an old murder that could break the spell.

Nanako Matsushima, Miki Nakatani, Yuko Takeuchi, Hitomi Sato, Yutaka Matsushige, and Hiroyuki Sanada star.
