Scott Derrickson to direct Marvel’s Dr. Strange

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Marvel Studios has appointed Scott Derrickson to helm the upcoming Doctor Strange movie. The SINISTER and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director will take on the master of the mystic arts on one of the dates Marvel set for unnamed features; May 6 2016, July 8 2016, or May 5 2017. We reported back in 2012 that he was starting a film based on the video game series Deus Ex, but it's more than likely this will take priority now.

Variety reported that a deal was not official, but as I was writing the story Derrickson was probably not able to contain his excitement and Tweeted:

Doctor Stephen Strange is known as the “sorcerer supreme” of the Marvel Universe yet he hasn’t really been explored on film before or with the current slate of Marvel movies. Strange has only been teased in THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. There are definitely a lot of possibilities with his character and I’m excited that there is finally movement on a Dr. Strange film. Now we are not only waiting to hear who is taking on ANT-MAN but now who will take on the role of Dr. Strange! These are exciting times.

We will keep you posted on all things Dr. Strange including the yet to be announced release date; Derrickson's recent work DELIVER US FROM EVIL will be hitting theaters July 2 2014.

Are you guys ready for the magic to come to Marvel?
