Four years ago, [REC] franchise co-creator Paco Plaza‘s horror movie Veronica was released through the Netflix streaming service, and Netflix subscribers reportedly found the film to be so terrifying that they would have to stop the movie mid-stream because they couldn’t handle the scariness. Now Plaza and Netflix are bringing us a prequel called Sister Death, and the Netflix España Twitter account has shared the first image from the prequel, along with a couple behind the scenes images. You can check them out right here:

The screenplay for Sister Death has been written by Jorge Guerricaechevarria, who frequently works with popular genre filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia. The story he crafted has the following synopsis:

In post-war Spain, Narcisa, a novice with supernatural powers, arrives at an old convent converted into a girls’ school to become a teacher. As the days go by, strange events and the increasingly disturbing situations that torment her will end up leading her to unravel the terrible skein of secrets that surround the convent and lie in wait for its inhabitants.

The character called Sister Death (or Hermana Muerte) in Veronica was played by Consuelo Trujillo. Trujillo is back for Sister Death, and is joined in the cast by Aria Bedmar, Almudena Amor, and Maru Valdivielso. Bedmar takes on the role of Narcisa.

Were you a fan of Veronica, and are you looking forward to the prequel Sister Death? Let us know by leaving a comment below. I’m going to have to revisit Veronica before Sister Death is released, because I only watched the movie one time back in 2018 and have no memory of it at this point.

Plaza co-directed [REC] and [REC] 2 with Jaume Balagueró, then directed [REC] 3: Genesis on his own. He has also directed the thriller Eye for an Eye and the horror film The Grandmother.
