Over the years there have been rumours that Marvel was toying with adapting the "Planet Hulk" story-line in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but those inside the Marvel camp were always quick to deny it. As development progressed on what would become THOR: RAGNAROK and Mark Ruffalo joined the cast, it started to become apparent that Marvel would at least be using some of "Planet Hulk" in their upcoming THOR sequel.

Earlier this year our own Editor-in-Chief Paul Shirey revealed that THOR: RAGNAROK would indeed contain a few "Planet Hulk" elements and several months later Marvel themselves teased Hulk's arena armour at San Diego Comic-Con. It seems pretty cut and dry at this point, but if you really need one more piece of evidence, THOR: RAGNAROK director Taika Waititi confirmed that the planet of Sakaar will be featured in the movie during an interview with Total Film (via MCU Exchange).

Sakaar was just an insane, far-off, futuristic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters…I was really excited when Kevin [Feige] and the rest of Marvel jumped on board with the idea to use [Jack] Kirby as a big influence in the design of the film. What’s really hard is staying authentic.

In the "Planet Hulk" story-line, Sakaar was the world on which the Hulk found himself after being blasted into space by S.H.I.E.L.D. Once there, he was enslaved and forced to fight in gladiator battles for the planet's emperor, the Red King. We're not sure exactly how these events will play out in THOR: RAGNAROK, but Total Film also adds that when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reunites with Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the big green guy will have already made a name for himself as a gladiator.

THOR: RAGNAROK is set for a November 3, 2017 release.
