The Jetsons new animated movie snags Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Okay, let's get a few things out of the way before we get to the news portion of this article. For starters, why didn't any of you tell me there was a new film for THE JETSONS in the works? Secondly, I used to have to biggest cartoon crush on Judy Jetson when I was a child, so please understand that this is a very big deal for me. There are lots of emotions happening inside of me, right now, and some of them are not meant for public consumption.

Whoa! Too much information for you? Heh, you can relax, that was just my way of getting your attention … even if it's the truth. Today, it's been announced that the Warner Animation Group has signed Conrad Vernon, who co-directed Seth Rogen's raunchy culinary orgy, SAUSAGE FEST, to direct the big-screen presentation of the futuristic Hanna-Barbera television series.

Interestingly enough, Warner Bros. has been hoping to create a live-action version of THE JETSONS ever since the success of Brian Levant's THE FLINTSTONES back in 1994. However, this new project will come to theaters courtesy of a beautiful, state-of-the-art animation format.

In case you're too young to remember, the Jetsons lived in a world that boasted elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions designed to make life in the future far more leisurely than anything you or I are used to in these modern times. I still can't believe this, but the original series was only comprised of 24 episodes, and aired on Sunday nights on ABC beginning September 23, 1962, with primetime reruns continuing through September 22, 1963. Honestly, I could have sworn that the show lasted far longer than that. Furthermore, thanks for the summary Wikipedia, sometimes you really do come through.

While I can't decide if THE JETSONS would be better suited as a live-action or animated affair, I do admit that I'm curious to see what Sony has planned for Hanna-Barbera's family of tomorrow. With any luck, kids will love the antics of George, Jane, Judy, Elroy, Rosie, and Astro the dog just as much as I did when I was their age.

For the moment, no voice casting announcements have been made, nor has a release window been announced. That being said, you can catch the original feature-length animated adventure of THE JETSONS (1990) on DVD today! Or, you can watch SAUSAGE PARTY, which is out on Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray formats right now – just make sure that the kids leave the room before you partake.
