There are a lot of Stephen King adaptations out in the world; some are fantastic, others are… not so great. One that lands in the not-so-great category is The Langoliers, the 1995 miniseries based on the novella by Stephen King. However, just because one adaptation failed doesn’t mean somebody can’t try again, and The Boogeyman director Rob Savage has previously expressed a desire to tackle a remake of The Langoliers.
While speaking with ComicBook.com, Rob Savage said that while the issue of the rights are still being dealt with, he thinks there’s a “good shot” he’s able to bring The Langoliers to life.
“There’s a bit of naughtiness when it comes to the rights, but I think hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out,” Savage said. “We’ve got such a great idea for developing that one out from the short story. Of all the ones in King’s work that have been adapted, I don’t think it’s ever been done justice to. It plays with ideas that I’ve never seen explored in a horror movie. The idea of time, and decaying time, and these creatures that are eating the time left behind — there’s such a great, cosmic horror movie to be made there that lends itself so well to film. Film is all about stretching and compressing time, and you can do so many great, playful things in that space that go beyond what’s there in the novella. I’m so excited about that one. I think that one stands a good shot of happening.“
The Langoliers centers on “a group of travelers on a red-eye flight from California to Maine wake up to discover that most of their fellow passengers have vanished mid-flight, along with the pilots and flight attendants.“
Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman is based on the Stephen King short story of the same name and follows high school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer as they reel from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims. The film stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Chris Messina (Sharp Objects), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box), Madison Hu (Voyagers), and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad). The Boogeyman was released on Blu-ray today.
