With the rise of comic-book movies over the past two decades, we've seen quite a number of origin stories, more than enough to fill our need. When they're done well, they can stand as some of the best of the genre, but it's just as easy to become bogged down in common origin story tropes, and that's something Todd McFarlane is hoping to avoid in his upcoming SPAWN reboot. While speaking with ComicBook.com, McFarlane said that we won't be seeing the backstory of the title character.
Nope. Nope. Nope. I’m not interested in the origin story. I can’t do it. I can’t do it. I’ve seen too many movies that spend way too much time for the set up.

Adding that he's become "exhausted by those movies" and doesn't find them overly interesting, Todd McFarlane praised the recent A QUIET PLACE for how it just dumped audiences into the story. "Given A Quiet Place came out and it starts with day 89, I love it. I love it," McFarlane said. "It didn’t go in any depth what happened in those first 88 days. I love it. So either you just go for the ride, or you don’t." It was announced last week that Jamie Foxx had signed on to star as Al Simmons, "a member of a CIA black ops team who is betrayed twice. After being set up by his cohorts to be murdered with his corpse set aflame, Newman is double crossed in Hell. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife. But Spawn finds himself stuck in a demonic creature shell, and that his wife moved on and married his best friend. So this is one pissed off antihero who attends to dispatching the scum of the city in good and evil battles that encompass earth, heaven and hell." Despite adding the award-winning actor to the cast, we won't be seeing as much of Spawn as we might think, with McFarlane describing the film as a "creep" movie.
When you start going into creep movies, then the camera doesn’t follow the boogie man, or the monster. It follows humans, which I have in my movie. But people enjoy creepy movies and don’t go, ‘Oh my gosh, I wish I saw the boogie man more.’ They don’t do that. They just go, 'Wow, that was cool.'
